Your Toothpaste Could Be Killing You

You are probably a person who is very health conscious and strives to live a more safe and natural life. If so, then this article will give you some information that may change your perspective on toothpaste.
What is wrong with toothpaste? Well, like most commercial health and beauty products, toothpaste has been industrialized over the years. With this industrialization comes some questionable ingredients commonly found in commercial toothpastes:
- Fluoride: One of the best known ingredients as well as one of the most active ingredients in toothpaste that is supposedly great for preventing cavities. Research has actually shown that it doesn’t do the job very well and – more frightening – can be very toxic to the body and could be the culprit for acne outbreaks around the mouth and chin area.
- Titanium Dioxide: Another active ingredient in toothpaste that has been found to be carcinogenic. Very small particles of titanium dioxide can be absorbed through the mouth and may cause toxic damage on a cellular level.
- Glycerin: This ingredient is found in almost every toothpaste on the market today (even the natural ones). It gives toothpaste it’s pasty texture and keeps it from drying out. Doesn’t sound so bad, does it? But, it can be. Glycerin leaves a coating on your teeth that prevents the teeth’s natural re-mineralizing process, which leads to sensitivity.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: This ingredient gives you the foamy cleaning action we all expect from toothpaste, but sodium lauryl sulfate is actually a strong chemical surfactant that does not belong in your body. It’s also a common factor in acne and rashes around the mouth.
- Artificial Sweeteners: Toothpaste contains sorbitol and saccharin to make them sweet. The rule of thumb is to generally avoid chemical sweeteners.
So, if toothpaste is silently killing you, it makes sense to not use it any more, right? But if you stop using toothpaste, what will you use now to clean your teeth now?
Here are 11 natural toothpaste alternatives you can try. Find what works for you and ditch the toxic-laden products. Your mouth and your body will thank you!
1. Sea Salt: It doesn’t get more natural than this. Simply dab your toothbrush in sea salt and brush as usual. For those with sensitive teeth, dissolve the salt in water first.
2. Baking Soda: This one is a more popular toothpaste alternative. Like sea salt, dab the baking soda onto brush and brush like normal. You can use peppermint essential oil for a minty fresh feel.
3. Hydrogen Peroxide: For white and clean teeth, use 3% hydrogen peroxide and for an added punch, dip your toothbrush in a 50/50 mixture of baking soda and fine sea salt.
4. Herbal Tooth Powders: Do a great job of cleaning and the herbal ingredient can help ease inflammation, pain and infection throughout the mouth.
5. Dry Brushing: Do not use anything at all, simply brush your teeth with the brush.
6. Brush With Pure Water: If dry brushing doesn’t work well for you, use pure water. This method clears debris from the teeth very nicely.
7. All Natural Soap: Quite literally wash your mouth out with an all natural soap. Make sure there is no glycerin in the soap. Peppermint castile soap works very well. Tooth soap can also be used.
8. Coconut Oil: Does it come as any surprise that coconut oil is a great natural toothpaste alternative? Its antifungal and antibacterial properties are great for thoroughly cleaning your mouth. I personally use this method, along with baking soda, peppermint and clove essential oils.
9. Oral Irrigation: Using a Waterpik is great for getting the hard to reach areas for an additional cleaning, using sea salt water.
10. Essential Oils: Put one or two drops of peppermint oil on a dampened toothbrush if you are looking for a quick and easy way to get your mouth feeling clean and minty fresh.
11. Oil Pulling: Simply swish one tablespoon of oil (coconut or sesame oil) for several minutes. Sounds weird, I know, but your teeth will never feel this clean.
