Your Pokemon Posture May Be Harming Your Health
Written by: Kat Gal
I love running by Lake Michigan. I am also having fun dodging over all the ‘Pokemon people’ by the parks. It is quite entertaining to watch them. But I have to give them credit. They are outside and exercising – even in the rain or wind.
If you are into Pokemon, it is highly possibly that you’ve experienced many health benefits. Being outside you get fresh air into your system. Moving around helps your cardiovascular and general health and contributes to the loss off some unwanted pounds. Your mental health might improve by having fun and even meeting members of your local Pokemon crowd.
However, walking around with your phone looking at virtual monsters is not better for your posture than texting constantly or slouching over your computer.
Your Pokemon posture may be harming your health by how it has you pushing your head down and rolling your shoulders forward, folding over your body as well. Walking around with a collapsed Pokemon body makes it harder to breathe. It also causes muscle imbalances in your neck and back that can lead to pain and inflammation.
Do you need to give up Pokemon? Relax, I am not saying that.
Here is what you can do:
When not playing Pokemon:
Outside of your Pokemon time, work on creating balance and strength in your body. Stretching, yoga and pilates can be very helpful with strength, flexibility and good posture. You may want to visit a chiropractor, massage therapist, or a rolfer. They can help with loosening your muscles and aligning your body. Make sure to practice good posture.
When playing Pokemon:
Practice better posture. Stand taller. Walk upright. Pull your core in, open your chest and roll your shoulders up, then back, then down to achieve a better posture. Lift your phone up so it is at the level of your eyes. Instead of moving your head, you will simply be moving your eyes.
If you are not a Pokemon lover, but tend to text while walking or even read a book or newspaper on the go, you can still employ the same simple techniques for better posture.
Your body will thank you for not slouching, but rather walking proud and upright.
Do you like Pokemon Go? Have you experienced any health benefits besides the fun of chasing virtual characters? Share your answers in the comments below. We would love to hear from you.
