Your Hair Needs To Detox Too

We often hear about how important it is to occasionally detox our bodies. A detox is the removal of harmful or toxic substances from your body usually through drinking lots of water, eating more fiber and avoiding caffeine and processed foods.

But what about the rest of your body, such as your hair? Did you know that you can also detox your hair to bring it back to that healthier state?

We’re accustomed to purchasing manufactured products for our hair to make it look shiny and healthy. But those products come with a cost; they are full of chemicals and toxins, which – just like the damage they can cause to your body – can cause damage to your hair.

When you use store bought hair products, you can expect to find harmful ingredients such as coal tar, formaldehyde and retinoic acid, all of which can contribute to cancer.

How do you know when your hair needs a detox?

  • Your hair is rough and can easily knot.
  • It lacks luster.
  • It feels heavy from added chemicals. 

How To Detox Your Hair

1. Use Baking Soda As Shampoo. Baking soda absorbs excess oil from your hair shafts and scalp, which makes it a great alternative for dry shampoo. You can simply massage your hair with baking soda to help remove any toxins or oil that has been trapped in your hair shafts. Baking soda works by changing the pH of your hair, which helps to open up the hair shafts and expose any toxins or oils. However, this detox method can take time to work – anywhere between 2 weeks to 4 months.

2. Use A Mixture Of Apple Cider Vinegar And Honey As A Conditioner. The apple cider vinegar is naturally acidic, so it basically counteracts the effects of the baking soda. It works by closing the opened hair shafts to help prevent your hair from drying out and become weak. Using honey helps to soften and moisturize your hair.

How to use the conditioner mixture:

1. Trim your split ends.

2. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 cup of water until it is no longer grainy.

3. Massage the solution of baking soda and water into your scalp, just as you would a regular shampoo.

4. Rinse after 3 to 5 minutes.

5. Massage raw honey into damp hair and wash after a few minutes.

When you’re doing this hair detox, it is best to remember:

  • Make sure that the baking soda is diluted, because the pH balance of your hair is important.
  • Use cold water when you rinse.
  • Trim your hair on a regular basis.
  • Do a hair detox once a week.
