4 Ways To Get Rid Of Dust Mites At Home Without Chemicals

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Excuse this overshare, but there are times when I read information that makes me cringe and think, “EWW, GROSSSSSSSS!”
Especially when it is something I regularly do… like make my bed.
Little did I know that this habit could potentially be harming my health.
Sorry, Mom, but the time you spent teaching me to make my bed in the morning is quickly about to become null and void.
Here is WHY you should STOP making your bed in the morning: DUST MITES!
- They are invisible to the naked eye, because they are so small… but they are everywhere!
- Dust mites THRIVE in a warm, moist environment.
- When you sleep, you sweat – even up to a liter per night! This creates an ideal environment for MITES to live and breed.
- Scientists estimate 1.5 million dust mites could be living off of the dead skin cells in your bed.
Are you as disgusted as I am? Now, let’s compare the difference between a MADE bed and an UNMADE bed:
MADE Bed |
UNMADE Bed |
- Traps your body heat, skin cells and sweat in the sheets, which the mites live off of.
|
- Exposes sheets to light and air.
- Dries sheets out.
- Depletes mite’s lifeline.
|
WHAT Should You Do?
Because dust mites are everywhere, not making your bed in the morning may not have a drastic effect on your health… but it is still a simple precaution that you can take to keep you breathing clearly and easily.
Simply fold back your bed sheets in the morning (if you prefer a tidy look) to allow your bed to “breathe.”
Other precautions to take to create a safe and healthy bed atmosphere:
- Wash your sheets and pillowcases at least 1 time every 2 weeks.
- Wash your pillows and replace them every 2 years.
- Vacuum your mattress when changing your sheets.
Are you a bit grossed out by this information? Yeah, me too. BUT – the more you know, the healthier you can be!
