You won’t believe what spinach can do for your heart!

Yes, spinach is delicious, versatile and full of health promoting nutrients for your body. It is an anti-inflammatory and alkaline green. It is full of antioxidants, vitamins (A, C and K), minerals, fiber and plant-based protein to keep you going. It is great for your blood pressure, vision, bones, immune system, brain function and nervous system.

But no matter how amazing the health benefits of spinach are, this is not what I am talking about today.

How Spinach Can Be Used For Human Hearts

According to a study published in Biomaterials, scientists have discovered a way to build working human heart muscle using SPINACH. This finding can potentially lead to solving the problem of repairing damaged organs. How crazy!

Researchers have already created large-scale human tissues using various methods, including 3D printing. Making tiny and delicate blood vessels vital to human tissue health has been a bigger challenge.

Joshua Gershlak, co-author of the study at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) explained that while tissue engineering is amazing, one of its major limiting factors is the lack of vascular network that leads to a lot of tissue death. However, if you look at a leaf, you will notice a branching network of thin veins that deliver water and nutrients to its plant cells very much like human veins do for human cells.

Scientist of the study decided to use plant veins to replicate the way human blood moves through human tissues. They have modified spinach leaves by removing the plant cells and only keeping the cellulose frames. The idea of using cellulose is not well known, but has been used in regenerative medicine already, including wound healing, bone tissue engineering and cartilage tissue engineering. The next step was to bathe the plant frame in live human cells, allowing human tissue to grow on the spinach scaffolding.

This process transformed the spinach leaf into a mini heart. By sending fluids through the tiny veins, the teams showed that blood can actually flow through the recreated system.

While the study is fascinating and promising, there is a lot more to be done to make this concept into a reality, but the final goal is to be able to replace damaged tissues in those who have suffered cardiac issues or heart attacks.

With or without research like this though, you still don’t want to risk developing heart attacks – you want to do what you can now to prevent them. While some heart problems are genetic, most heart disease develop due to lifestyle factors. You don’t want to ruin your health and heart then wait for the ‘quick fix’ (which is not so quick or easy, actually) through surgery (even if it’s with spinach leaves). You want to protect your heart.

This is how you can prevent heart disease and heart attacks:

  • Eat a healthy diet. Eliminate or highly reduce processed sugars, saturated fats, trans fats, animal products, artificial ingredients and processed foods in general. Choose a mostly plant-based, whole foods diet with lots of greens, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, pseudo grains and whole grains. If you must consume animal products, do it sparingly and choose organic, grass-fed, free-range and lean varieties.
  • Leave unhealthy addictions behind. Don’t smoke. Don’t drink alcohol, or if you do, drink occasionally and enjoy a glass of red wine, but avoid regular drinking or binge-drinking. Leave over-the-counter medicines and the overuse of antibiotics behind and use natural medicines, such as turmeric, ginger, garlic and so on.  
  • Move your body. Exercise and get your blood pumping at least 5 days a week for 20-30 minutes minimum, more as you get fitter. Don’t over-exercise either, there is no need to spend 5 hours at the gym. Mix up your exercise routine by doing cardio, strength-training and stretching.
  • Get enough sleep. Make sure to get at least 8 hours of good rest every night. Turn off your electronics at least an hour before bedtime to set the mood and to relax your body.
  • Take care of your mind. Lower your stress levels. Try relaxation exercises. Meditate, do yoga, journal, get a massage and take nature walks. Socialize with friends and family – hugs and laughs are good for your health.

Quinoa With Kale And Roasted Butternut Squash
  • 1 small butternut squash
  • 3 cups of finely chopped kale (stemmed)
  • ½ cup of finely chopped fresh parsley
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • Saltand pepper
  • ½ cup of uncooked quinoa
  • ½ cup of uncooked millet
  • ⅓ cup of slivered almonds
  • ¼ cup of raisins
  1. Preheat your oven to 375F.
  2. Cut your squash in half. Scoop out the seeds.
  3. Place the squash with the cut-side down on a baking sheet and bake for 50-60 minutes until it’s tender.
  4. Remove the squash from the oven. Cool it completely. Peel off the skin then cut the squash into small cubes, about ½-inches.
  5. While the squash is cooking, combine the kale, parsley lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl. Let them stand and settle for half an hour.
  6. In the meantime, bring 2 cups of water to boil. Add the millet and the quinoa. Return to boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Let your quinoa and millet mix stand, covered for 10 more minutes, then remove the cover and let it cool.
  7. While your grains cook, toast your almond in a skillet over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
  8. Once everything is ready, add your squash, quinoa-millet mixture and raisins to your kale mixture in a large bowl. Combine well. Add more salt, pepper or other seasonings if desired. Top with the toasted almonds.
  9. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
