What if I told you that you can eat banana peels and it may actually be good for you? I bet you would look at me funny. You are not a monkey afterall.
But it turns out you can eat banana peels. I didn’t know that this was a possibility either until I watched Emily Moran Barwick, vegan, author, activist and educator talking about her eating banana peels and explaining the benefits.
Emily seems to be thriving, so I got curious and looked into it more and found several other articles and posts talking about the topic. There is no scientific study supporting this, but banana peel eaters seem to be enjoying numerous benefits.
I personally haven’t tried eating banana peels, but in case you are braver than I am, here are some benefits that will inspire you.
5 Benefits Of Eating Banana Peels
1. Banana Peels May Raise Your Mood:Banana peels contain high levels of tryptophan, an essential amino acid which is the precursor to your brain’s happy hormone, serotonin.
2. Banana Peels May Lower Your Cholesterol:Banana peels are full of fiber both soluble and insoluble) which is shown to lower your LDL, or otherwise known as ‘bad’ cholesterol.
3. Banana Peels May Help With Your Digestion And Weight Maintenance:Due to their high fiber content, they help get things moving, or in other words, help you poop. They will help keep you full longer and get rid of waste products efficiently (through pooping).
4. Banana Peels May Provide Lots Of Antioxidants: Antioxidants prevent cell damage and therefore, help you prevent and heal an array of health problems and to live longer. Banana peels are high in polyphenols and carotenoids; both are substances with antioxidant properties.
