You Need To Be Careful With Binge Drinking

By Lindsay Sibson

I don’t know how my liver did NOT jump out of my body in those days. YIKES!

The absolute abuse that my friends and I would put our bodies through on a weekly basis was just outrageous. It seriously scares me to look back on that time period of my life and think of all the partying and copious amounts of alcohol.

Nowadays, if I even dare to consume more than a few drinks in a night, my 32 year old body “feels it” for days on end – ugh.

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a glass of red wine and the occasional “night out.” However, the last time I had one too many, I couldn’t even get myself out of bed in the morning to go to a dentist appointment!

Not only did I feel awful physically, mentally I felt so beat up as well – so it got me to thinking…

WHAT exactly happens to your body when you binge drink? Let me just tell ya, it’s so much more than just a pounding headache.

But first, let’s take a look at WHAT binge drinking is:

  • Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol in a short period of time
  • The most common form of alcohol abuse in the U.S.A.
  • Defined as having:
    • 4 or more alcoholic drinks in the span of 2 hours (for women)
    • 5 or more alcoholic drinks for men

The Scary Effects Of Binge Drinking

Causes Inflammation
  • Alcohol is a toxin and is dangerous to your cells
  • Irritates and inflames the lining of your stomach
    • Can cause gastritis
    • Results in serious stomach pain, nausea and vomiting
  • Some alcohol can increase the amount of acid your stomach produces
    • Overtime can become erosive
    • Can destroy your stomach lining
    • Leads to bleeding and ulcers
  • Inflammation throughout your body can cause  a plethora of illnesses and diseases
    • Depression
    • Cancer
    • Pain
    • Heart disease
Compromises Your Heart Health
  • Raises your:
    • Triglyceride levels in your blood
    • Blood pressure
    • Risk of stroke
  • According to the American Heart Association, limit your alcohol intake to 1 glass a day for women (2 for men)
Messes With Your Motor Skills And Vision
  • Suppresses your nervous system function
  • Alcohol mimics the neurotransmitter GABA in your brain (the connection between neurons)
    • Blocks the proper transmission of neurological messages
  • As a result, your experience:
    • Slow and slurred speech
    • Lack of balance
    • Dizziness
  • Long term heavy alcohol use can lead to PERMANENT damage
Increases Your Risk Of Alcohol Poisoning
  • Binge drinking is one of the top ways to get alcohol poisoning
    • Causes vomiting, seizures, confusion, slowed or irregular breathing
    • Can also make you pass out!
  • If you become unconscious, the alcohol in your digestive tract continues to be released into your bloodstream
    • Causes the level of alcohol in your body to increase even more
  • It IS possible to consume a deadly amount of alcohol and still be functioning because your blood alcohol level can continue to rise even after you’ve stopped drinking
Stresses Your Liver
  • Your liver is responsible for handling potential poisons that enter your body
    • Alcohol is toxic and therefore treated as a poison when it enters your body
  • Your liver can only process about a half ounce of alcohol per HOUR
    • Example: 2 shots of 80-proof liquor in an hour is almost 3 times MORE than you liver  can handle
  • Excess consumption overwhelms your liver and can  lead to:
    • Desensitizing your liver (making it more susceptible to damage)
    • Scar tissues
    • Fibrosis
    • Cirrhosis
  • Stressing your liver can result in a buildup of toxins in your body because your liver is too busy to process and filter them
Interferes With Your Pancreas
  • Alcohol causes your pancreas to pump our extra insulin to help break it down
  • Your body attempts to metabolize and digest alcohol, BUT there is no energy to extract from it
    • Why alcohol is referred to as “empty calories”
    • The extra calories get stored as fat
  • Interferes with your pancreas’ ability to secrete digestive juices
    • Causes inflammation
    • Can lead to acute pancreatitis, which results in severe pain, vomiting, nausea and yellowing of the skin (jaundice)

Sorry to be the bearer of horrifying “news,” but drinking more than an occasional glass of wine just got a WHOLE lot less attractive.

You can still enjoy your favorite adult drink, just do so responsibly by:

  • Keeping your consumption to 1-2 drinks per day at the most (obviously less is healthier!)
  • When drinking, sip slowly
  • Drink water between alcoholic drinks to rehydrate your body and slow down your intake of alcohol

Cheers (with water)!

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
