You Mom Was Right – 4 Pieces of Wisdom from Mom on Staying Healthy

I know it may be hard to admit, but your mom was actually right when it comes to these 4 things. Likely more than that, but we’ll keep things simple. 🙂

Give credit where credit is due, right? Mom knows her stuff and just as a reminder, here are some of the incredible tips to continue to carry with you as you navigate your way towards optimal health!

1. Eat Your Greens – Depending on how old you are, that phrase might have meant boiled brussel sprouts, but the sentiment is still true. Dark, leafy green vegetables are the number one missing food group from the Standard American Diet and that needs to change. Green vegetables are a rich source of minerals including magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium and zinc. They give us fiber and folic acid as well. Dark, leafy greens improve liver and kidney function, improve our immune system, work to prevent cancer and promote a healthy gut. So listen to your mom on this one and start eating more greens! Try them roasted, sautéed with garlic and coconut oil or, since spring is here, cooked on the grill.

2. Don’t Stay Up Too Late –  Sleep deprivation is a chronic problem in our country and has a direct connection to good (or poor) health. Not getting enough sleep contributes to weight gain, decreased energy, poor concentration and decreased memory. The US National Library of Health reports that eight hours of sleep increases your ability to problem solve by 50% and can improve motor skills by 20%. Eight hours for a more successful day? What’s to argue? Get your head to the pillow and get your eight hours in. If you did have a late night or know you have long night ahead of you, the National Sleep Foundation promotes the idea of a 20-minute nap. It’s long enough to give you a reprieve and improve short-term alertness, but not too long to interfere with your nighttime sleep.

3. Remember To Say “Thank You” –  A gratitude study by Dr. Emmons, author of Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier showed that practicing gratitude can increase happiness levels by close to 25%. Couldn’t be any simpler than that – a little thanks, a little happiness – what’s not to like?

4. Go Outside And Play – With technology being at the forefront of our days, we rarely take time to go outside and “play.” Lack of exercise contributes to weight gain and disease and also plays a part in keeping energy levels up. Even if it means going for a 15-minute walk around the block, take time to move your body every day. A little fresh air and sunshine to boost your mood and improve your health. The best part – walking doesn’t cost anything.

Be sure to celebrate your mom’s wisdom… even if it has a whole new meaning these days.

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
