You Gotta Try This New Breakfast Experiment

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day… But what should you eat for breakfast? Read on to find out what’s the best breakfast for your body.

There are so many delicious breakfast recipes online from green juices to pancakes, from smoothies to chia puddings, from oatmeal to waffles, from eggs to granola, that it’s hard to choose – let alone figure out – what’s the healthiest for you.

The truth is that any of these options can be healthy for you. Then there are those who believe in intermittent fasting and skip breakfast and wait for an early lunch at 11 or noon. This can actually be a healthy option for some. Then of course, there are those who skip breakfast and just drink a morning coffee, or grab a sugary granola bar, or eat a donut on the run. These latter ideas are absolutely not healthy and only lead to sugar crashes.

Our bodies are all different. Our personal needs are different based on our health history, age, sex, activity level and culture. And yes, personal preferences matter too. Eating something with joy is important. If you hate every bite of a banana, you will receive less benefits, even if it’s full of nutrients. But if it happens to be your favorite meal, your body will be more ready to accept its healing benefits.

How can you figure out what breakfast is right for you?

The best way to find out is a really fun and powerful exercise called the Breakfast Experiment.

For one week, eat a different breakfast every day. Grab a notebook and write down every day what you had for breakfast. Write down how you felt immediately after your meal, how you felt 2 hours later (hungry again? satisfied?) and how you felt throughout the day. You may want to note your food choices throughout the day following each food choice as well.

A healthy breakfast sets you up for a healthy day, while a sugary and processed breakfast may lead to more unhealthy choices. Include some unhealthy choices as well to notice how they affect your body versus a whole food alternative.

Here is an example of a week:

Day 1: Scrambled eggs or tofu

Day 2: Oatmeal

Day 3: A fruit salad

Day 4: A muffin with coffee

Day 5: Fresh vegetables
Day 6: Nothing, skip breakfast

Day 7: Green smoothie or green juice

You can repeat this experiment as many times and for as long as you need to. You can repeat the same breakfasts again to see if your body constantly reacts the same. It will likely take a few weeks or even a month or two to figure out the best options for your body. You can also play around with the timing of your breakfast.

Once you’ve figured out what foods make you feel great, keep eating those and ditch the foods that don’t agree well.

You can play around with this experiment to find out what your body likes for lunch, dinner and snacks as well.
