50 Reasons Why Superfoods Must Stay In Your Kitchen

50 Reasons Why Superfoods Must Stay In Your Kitchen

Hi, my name is Drew… and I’m addicted to Superfoods (seriously!).

We are bombarded with thousands of toxins on a daily basis. Although your body has an incredible detoxification system and can get rid of many of them on its own, our modern environment is still taking its toll. According to GlobalHealingCenter, we are exposed to an average of 2 million toxins every single day!

That’s why I decided to dedicate an entire article on my website to the benefits of SUPERFOODS. These bad boys are mother nature’s secret weapon for cleansing your body of harmful substances that may be damaging your health.

In this informational, supercharged, jam-packed post about Superfood goodness, I’m going to lay out 50+ superfoods worth talking about.

What Are Superfoods?

Superfoods are thought to be the most nutritionally dense foods made by mother nature. However, there is no exact criteria for superfoods. The truth is that the term “superfood” is more of a marketing term to grab your attention and to help you choose the most nutritious foods out there.

Superfoods are not an official food group, but include all kinds of whole foods (or in some cases dried, powdered or liquid extract versions of foods). Greens, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds and beans may all fall under the “super” category.

Most superfoods do have an obvious advantage over typical produce items. For example, Moringa leaf has two times the amount of protein as yogurt, four times the amount of vitamin A as carrots, three times the amount of potassium as bananas, four times the amount of calcium as cow’s milk and seven times the amount of vitamin C as oranges!

Organic Vs Non-Organic Superfoods

Organic Conventional (Non-Organic)
  • Uses natural chemical-free fertilizers
  • Not genetically modified
  • Higher levels of antioxidants
  • Uses chemical fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides
  • May contain food additives, fortifiers, dyes, etc.
  • May be genetically modified
  • Potentially higher levels of toxic metals

Identifying Organic Superfoods

100% Organic – made from 100% organic ingredients, can have USDA organic seal.

Organic – made from at least 95% organic materials, can use USDA organic seal.

Made With Organic Ingredients – made from at least 70% organic ingredients, cannot use USDA organic seal.

Non-Organic – less than 70% organic ingredients, cannot use USDA organic seal.

Powder Vs Regular Superfoods

Many superfoods, like kale, apples and walnuts are actually whole foods, whereas many other popular superfoods, like spirulina and chlorella are most often found in powder form.

Popular whole foods like kale, spinach, berries, almonds, cashews, garbanzo beans and chia seeds are easy to find at most health food stores, conventional grocery stores, farmers markets and online groceries in the produce and bulk sections. In other words, they are easily available.

On the other hand, there are other superfoods that are difficult to find as a whole food. Spirulina and chlorella are blue-green algeas that are likely not grown at your local farms. Many superfoods come from specific, far-away areas of the world. Maca is from the Andes of Peru, while goji berries, Reishi mushrooms and cordycpeps are native of Asia.

The best way to get these powerful, yet far-away superfoods is in a dried and powdered form.

Why Are Superfoods Disputed?

If you search online, there is definitely a disagreement about what superfoods are and whether or not you need them. Since there is no exact criteria for superfoods and since “superfood” is a relatively new term, some may argue that it is only a marketing term to influence you to buy expensive foods.

I believe that any strategy that encourages people across the world to eat more REAL, whole, unprocessed foods is doing us a service.

There is no catch. The term superfood simply encourages you to buy nutritionally dense and healthy foods, instead of processed junk with empty calories and refined sugar.

The World’s Top Superfoods

Okay so now that I’ve got you interested in this category of foods, let’s talk about some of my favorites. Here are 50+ superfoods I eat that can be found in my kitchen regularly.

Fruit And Berry Superfoods

If you were to sit a young child down at a table full of different foods, which foods would they grab first? Most likely they would pick the high energy, colorful foods like fruits and berries. In his book The Detox Miracle Sourcebook, Robert Morse, N.D. says “The ancient Greeks… ate nothing but fruit, and each generation reached the age of 200 years.”

Berries have incredible antioxidant and cell-protecting nutrients called phytochemicals. These neutralize free radicals in the body that may otherwise cause disease. They help protect us against EMFs and radiation. The flavonoids in berries help us with mental clarity, memory and learning.

  • Mulberry: Mulberries are sweet fruits that originated in China and are praised for their unique flavor. They have been known to improve digestion, increase circulation, boost immune system, slow the aging process and more.
  • Elderberry: Elderberries are most common in the Northern hemisphere. They are dark blue or black and have a sharp, sweet flavor. They are known for their ability to help boost the immune system and prevent allergies.
  • Dragon fruit: Dragon fruit is very common in Southeast-Asia. They are a delicious fruit with lots of vitamins, but their seeds are even more potent, filled with inflammation-reducing Omega-3s.
  • Goji berries: Goji berries are usually found in a dried form and are a great addition to any oatmeal, granola, bar, smoothie or fruit bowl. Goji berries are powerful for energy, brain health, heart health and a healthy blood sugar.
  • Blueberries: They are rich in flavonoids, antioxidants and vitamins. They can boost your brain power, memory, metabolic function and energy.
  • Cranberries: Cranberries are particularly powerful if you are dealing with or hoping to prevent UTIs. More importantly, they may aid your healing journey from ovarian cancer too.
  • Blackberries: Blackberries are one of the top berries when it comes to antioxidant power. They can also prevent cardiovascular disease, cancers and osteoporosis.
  • Strawberries: It may be oranges that you think of first when it comes to vitamin C, but the truth is that strawberries may just be the queens of vitamin C. Because of their folic acid content, they are even good for your heart.
  • Raspberries: Raspberries are rich in fiber and high in vitamin C and manganese. Along with other berries, they are powerful against most disease.
  • Pomegranate: Pomegranates made the cut on the superfruit list because of their unbelievably high antioxidant levels.
  • Avocados: Avocados are the healthiest fats out there. They are also high in fiber, can lower your cholesterol levels and protect your heart. Avocados can also keep your belly satisfied for a long time.
  • Papayas: Papayas are your best bet if you want some superfruit for digestive health. They are also great for your heart.
  • Acai berries: You might’ve heard of the insanely delicious acai bowls that make amazing breakfasts and desserts. Acai berries are tiny berry hails all the way from Brazil. Powered with antioxidants, they are great weapons for all kinds of disease.

Herb Superfoods

Nothing ages a person more quickly than stress. Did you know our brain cells actually die when exposed to high amounts of cortisol (the stress hormone)? In our modern, high-paced society, stress has become a way of living rather than an occasional reaction to threats.

Many of the following herbs are also called adaptogens. Adaptogens are plants that have the ability to help our bodies cope with stress. The influence this has on our health is enormous, as stress is a root cause of numerous illnesses. Herbs have also been used medicinally for thousands of years and are a staple of holistic medicine.

  • Astragalus: Astragalus is an herb that grows natively in China and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. There have been some studies done to show that Astragalus may lower blood sugar and be useful when treating patients with anemia. In chemotherapy patients, astragalus was shown to help support faster recovery and longevity.
  • Ashwagandha: A study published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine shows that Ashwagandha achieves a highly significant reduction in stress and anxiety and serum cortisol levels. In fact, it was able to reduce cortisol up to 27.9%! Ashwagandha, along with the spice Curcumin, are some of the FEW known natural substances that help our brain increase levels of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor)! This means they are some of the only substances on the planet that help our brain create new brain cells.
  • Black, white and red Maca powder: Maca root enhances endocrine function. The endocrine system includes all of the glands in the body and the hormones they secrete. These hormones control things like fertility, sexual function, digestion, brain and nervous system physiology and energy levels. Women have found that taking Maca root helps to relieve menstrual or menopausal symptoms. Both men and women have taken it to boost libido.
    • Benefits specific to Red Maca: Prostate protection and bone support. Better for men.
    • Benefits specific to Black Maca: Increases sperm count in men, as well as sperm mobility. Helps to protect against stress stronger than other varieties. Best against fatigue and adrenal stress. Increases memory. Natural antidepressant.
    • Benefits specific to White Maca:  Female fertility. Better for women.
  • Ginger: In a recent study done at Thammasat University in Thailand, they found that ginger is as effective as Dramamine in treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy and has fewer side effects.
  • Rhodiola Rosea: In 2002, a review about Rhodiola was written in the journal of the American Botanical Council. They reported that several studies in both humans and animals have shown that this herb helps prevent stress, fatigue and the damaging effects of oxygen deprivation
  • Frankincense: Frankincense comes from a resinous sap inside Boswellia sacra trees that grows in the Arabian Peninsula. Frankincense oil contains 8% sesquiterpenes and is 78% monoterpenes. Monoterpenes are found in the essential oils of many plants and prevent processes in the body that lead to cancer. There have been multiple studies done on monoterpenes and their antiseptic, antibacterial and anticancer effects. Monoterpenes help rid the body of damaged DNA and increase the level of liver enzymes responsible for removing toxins from the body. Researchers have found that there is some agent in frankincense that stops cancer from spreading. Frankincense seems to recognize corrupted DNA coding in a cell and is able to shut it down, without damaging the surrounding healthy cells.
  • Moringa: Moringa leaf is used to balance blood sugar levels, boost the immune system, increase metabolism, help with weight loss, aid digestion, help with tumors and ulcers and detoxify the kidneys and liver. An animal study done at the University of Allahabad in India showed that Moringa was effective in lowering blood sugar levels by 26.7 and 29.9%! Moringa is commonly used to treat diabetes in India.

Nuts And Seeds Superfoods

Nuts and seeds have been an important energy source throughout history. They are extremely nutrient-dense and their fat content comes mostly from heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Do you want to lower your risk of heart disease and cancer? Curb cravings and addictions? Boost your energy? Add tasty and healthy ingredients to your recipes? It’s time to “go nuts!”

  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds are high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids. They are powerful in reducing inflammation, helping weight loss and lowering your blood pressure.
  • Flax seeds: Flax seeds are another group of seeds that are high in Omega-3s and protein and help in fighting inflammation, bringing you energy and lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol. Both flax and chia seeds can serve as substitutes for eggs when mixed with water.
  • Hemp seeds: Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant. But no, hemp seeds will not make you high – perhaps high from health and energy, because of their powerful benefits. Hemp seeds are high in Omega-3s, can reduce inflammation and pain and boost your immune system through its zinc content.
  • Pumpkin seeds: Pumpkin seeds are the king of seeds when it comes to minerals. They are rich in copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc and phosphorous and even protein.
  • Sesame seeds: Sesame seeds can be enjoyed in the form of seeds or as a delicious spread called tahini. They are rich in protein, fiber, zinc calcium, magnesium and iron and can bring you energy and support your bones.
  • Walnuts: Walnuts look like your brain and are good for your brain too. They can also boost your heart health, lower your cholesterol, lower your chance of diabetes and fight depression.
  • Cashews: Cashews are delicious and bring you joy. For real, because cashews can boost your mental health; a single handful is just as powerful as Prozac to fight depression naturally.
  • Almonds: You need almonds in your life. They can lower your risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other chronic illnesses.
  • Pecans: Pecans are similar to walnuts and are also great for brain power. They are particularly important for men as they are powerful for prostate health.
  • Brazil nuts: Brazil nuts are nature’s mineral supplements. Just two brazil nuts a day will help you meet your selenium needs that may protect against prostate cancer and other diseases.

Green Superfoods

Of course you can’t forget the greens. Greens are a MUST when pursuing any healthy eating plan or style. These are some of the top green superfoods that are easy to obtain and add an essential nutrient kick to your diet.

  • Spirulina: Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is naturally loaded with vitamins A through E, minerals from iron, zinc, potassium to calcium and antioxidants. Spirulina is also considered a complete protein. It can fight free-radicals and most forms of the disease.
  • Chlorella: Chlorella is another powerful blue-green algae. It is most known for its powerful ability to fight heavy metal toxicity in your body.
  • Microgreens: Microgreens are the underdeveloped greens of vegetables such as kale, arugula and broccoli that are harvested just one to two weeks after planting. At this stage, the greens are filled with even more nutrients, energy and healing benefits that when older, aren’t quite as potent.
  • Wheatgrass: Wheatgrass is a nutrient rich type of grass in the wheat family, though it is gluten free. It is often used in powder form or smoothies and is packed with nutrients such as iron, calcium, magnesium, amino acids, chlorophyll and vitamins A, C and E.
  • Kale: Kale has been a superstar for a long time. It is high in fiber, minerals and antioxidants. It’s great for your digestion and eye health and can fight cancer.
  • Spinach: Spinach is Popeye’s favorite as we all know. It can help you to build muscles, aid your digestion, keep your blood pressure healthy and fight cancer.
  • Mustard greens: Mustard greens may have an acquired taste, but they are powerful. Mustard greens are filled with enzymes, phytonutrients, beta-caroteen and vitamin A to protect your body.
  • Cilantro: Cilantro is a powerful green herb that is an excellent ingredient for salsas and guacamole. It is a powerful fighter of heavy metal toxicity.
  • Parsley: Parsley comes in two varieties, curly and flat with equal benefits. It can fight inflammation, aid your immune system and detox your body.

Bean Superfoods

Who doens’t enjoy some good beans? There are many different varieties, but these are the types that top the nutrient charts when it comes to beans.

  • Black beans: Black beans are excellent for Mexican salads and dishes and are the main ingredient of the popular healthy black bean brownies. They are high in protein and rich in antioxidants.
  • Navy beans: Navy beans got their name for being a basic supply for the military in the early 20th century. They are high in fiber, iron, copper, manganese and vitamin B1.
  • Pinto beans: Pinto beans are rich in protein, only one cup has 14 grams in it. They also have molybdenum in them, which helps to detoxify sulfites.
  • Garbanzo beans: Garbanzo beans make hummus (and hummus is life!). Just one cup has 18 grams of protein and lots of fiber to keep you healthy, strong and satisfied.
  • Lentils: Lentils are not beans, but legumes, but they deserve to be on this list. They are rich in protein, fiber, B6 and magnesium.

When it comes to the superfoods of superfoods, AKA powdered forms of extraordinary superfoods, you want to consume them on a daily basis.

You can use superfoods in your green juices, green smoothies, shakes, salad dressings, dips, soups, teas, homemade energy bars, homemade granola, homemade (healthy) (n)ice cream and toppings and baked goods. The options are endless. You can find hundreds of recipes on our website and a few dozen in this article as you scroll down. Get creative. Experiment. You won’t get bored, I promise.

There are superfoods that you can even mix with water and drink as a delicious juice. Organifi Green and Red Juice are excellent examples, they are filled with organic, plant-based, high-quality superfoods to fuel your body with delicious nutrition.

How many superfoods should I eat?

Because there is a different recommendation for each superfood, it is the best to look at the recommendation of the manufacturer. Each scoop includes the perfect amount and combination your body needs for the best benefits.

Eating Superfoods On A Budget

The more expensive powdered superfoods, like spirulina, chlorella, Cordyceps, Matcha tea, Maca and so on, are extremely powerful superfoods that can bring you superior health benefits. You don’t even need a lot of them to experience a positive difference in your health and well-being.
