World Health Organization Says To Ban Trans Fats By 2023

Written by: Sara Wylie

The deeper you delve into the world of health and wellness, the more you learn about fats and how there are good fats for you to consume and bad fats.

Trans fats are the bad kind of fats.

And the World Health Organization (WHO) is making sure everyone knows it.

This week, WHO launched a movement known as REPLACE (REview dietary sources, Promote use of healthier fats, Legislate, Assess changes, Create awareness and Enforce) that outlines how countries can remove and replace all trans fats in their food, with the intention to eradicate it from the globe.

Trans fats (or trans fatty acids) come to be when vegetable oil hardens in a process called hydrogenation. These fats are most commonly used in fried foods, snack foods, baked goods, coffee creamer, vegetable shortening, stick margarine, etc. Trans fats have shown to have harmful effects on health, raising bad cholesterol levels and ultimately increasing risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease alone claims over 17 million lives a year and it’s become clear that trans fats only contribute to that – it’s a wonder they’re still so widely used a such a popular ingredient.

Though WHO doesn’t necessarily have the authority or power to enact a worldwide ban, their influence is strong enough that they could absolutely inspire change. What they’re proposing is absolutely doable as well and is already in the works.

Healthier alternatives can be used that would not affect taste or cost of food,” members of WHO have stated. There are many other options of fats and oils that are not only safer, but also exponentially more healthy.

Not only will the world take another step towards a healthier and nourishing reality by eradicating this harmful ingredient from its food, but the fatality rates of heart disease will go down, especially since trans fats are currently consumed so regularly and impact heart health so negatively.

“If the world replaces trans fats, people won’t taste the difference, food won’t cost more, but your heart will know the difference,” said Dr. Frieden, president of Resolve to Save Lives, another organization whose goal is to eliminate trans fats and other harmful ingredients from food all around the world and bring down the cardiovascular disease epidemic that’s escalated to a worldwide issue over the past several decades.

Other countries have already started making steps towards restricting and removing trans fats from their food, including Canada, Denmark, Switzerland, Britain and the United States (starting next month, all products sold in the U.S. must be free of industrially produced trans fats). Other countries such as Thailand are going to be following similar motions soon. The goal is to continue this shift and eventually make trans fats a thing of the past. WHO has projected that this can become reality as soon as 2023.

What Can You Do?

Awareness is key when it comes to making a change as big as this. Spread the word about trans fats and the movements that are taking place to eradicate it from our food!

You also vote with your dollars. Start paying attention to your food’s ingredients and avoid everything that contains trans fats and, especially as trans fats start to disappear from our food in the upcoming months, focus your dollars on the foods/brands that successfully remove it.

We all got what it takes to make change happen in this world. Trans fats are one of many ingredients that don’t need to be found in our food in order to make it delicious.

Were you aware about the global movement happening with trans fats? What will you do to help support and further influence this vital shift? Share your thoughts and experiences with us in the comments below and of course, share this article to help spread the word!

Remember, we’re in this together.
