Women’s Health Is Plummeting + 6 Tips To Change This
Why Is Women’s Health Worse Now Then 30 Years Ago?
How would you rate your health compared to your peers?
If you are a woman and think that you are less healthy than those around you, you are not alone. New research shows that women’s health has been on the decline over the past several decades.
Women’s Health Is On The Decline
A long-term, population-based Swedish survey on 1,811 people has found shocking news regarding women’s health. The team of researchers has followed women and men aged 25 – 34 from 1990 to 2014 asking participants to self-rate their health over the years.
While back in 1990 8.5 percent of women rated their health worse than their peers, by 2014 this number increased to a shocking 20 percent. This trend was different for men, as they rated their health better in 2014 than in 1990. These findings also correspond with the increased sick leaves and illnesses among women over the years. Results suggest that the risk of both short and long-term health issues have increased over time.
What Are The Causes Of Health Issues In Women?
The authors of the study have suggested several negative health trends among young women that can lead to health issues, including:
- More difficult working conditions, especially in female-dominated professions
- Too much stress and increased risk of burnout
- Lack of quality of personal life
- Violence against women
- Changing and conflicting norms in society (eg. equality vs traditional gender roles)
- The pressure to ‘manage everything’
- Self-confidence based on achievements and consumption
Do any of these sound familiar to you? Which one are you personally experiencing?
You may wonder why men are doing better than women. The study has suggested a few possible reasons for men rating their health better than women, including:
- The labor market still values men more than women
- Having more of an equal responsibility at home (household chores and raising children) is beneficial for men’s health
- The equality norm allows more variations in the masculine role and men can explore themselves more
- The internet also encourages less rigid masculine norms
Overall it seems that over the years women have been experiencing more stress, more pressure, more responsibilities and higher expectations, while men seem to enjoy a little less pressure while still being respected more.
How To Improve Your Health If You Are A Woman (Men: These Are Important Tips For The Women In Your Life!)
If you are a woman you may be experiencing increased pressure and stress compared to those a generation or two before you. But it doesn’t mean that you have to give in and accept a compromised health. You can take charge of your life and reclaim your health and happiness.
Here are a few important tips to create health in your life:
1. Reduce Stress In Your Life
Stress is one of the top killers in our Western world. Women particularly face an extreme amount of stress at work, at home and in society in general. The good news is that there are plenty of wonderful ways to reduce stress in your life.
How can you reduce stress in your life?
Developing a meditation practice and practicing yoga can help you regain balance throughout the day. Listening to relaxation tapes, regular deep breathing exercises and positive mantras can calm your nerves. Journaling can help you release negative energy. Simple things, like a nice bath, reading a book or making a nourishing meal can help you bring your peace back.
Did you know that you can also turn to food to reduce stress?
It’s true. Ashwagandha is an amazing superfood that according to a 2012 study can safely and effectively reduce stress and anxiety.
What is the best way to enjoy the stress-reducing benefits of Ashwagandha?
Organifi Green Juice, of course. Organifi does not only include a healthy dose of Ashwagandha, but it is also abundant with other powerful superfoods, like spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass, matcha green tea and more to reduce stress, balance your hormones, boost your immune system, support your mental clarity, detoxify your body and support your overall well-being. Just mix it with a glass of water for a ready to go, delicious green drink.
2. Change Your Mindset
Mindset is everything. Changing your perception to a positive one and living life with confidence can transform your life.
Just think about it: do you want to live your life out of fear or out of love? The answer is: love, of course.
Through practice, you can learn to choose love at all times. Don’t let fear dictate your life, practice love instead.
Developing a gratitude practice is a fantastic way to train your brain to see the bright side of life. When you wake up each morning, feel and declare gratitude for each new day, the people you hold close and the good things you have in your life. Keeping a gratitude journal and jotting down 3 – 5 things each day that you are grateful for is also a great idea. Try to think of new things each day instead of going for the ‘basics,’ like family and friends.
Having a gratitude accountability buddy can also be a big help. It has been one of the biggest blessings in my life: each day we text each other a couple of things we are grateful for and send loving vibes to support each other’s gratitude practice.
Positive affirmations and mantras can transform your outlook on life, increase your self-confidence, better your health and change your energy. Whenever you look into the mirror, repeat a self-loving mantra of your choice, for example ‘I love and accept myself right now.’ Whenever in doubt, feeling sad, confused or angry, repeat the mantra over and over again, ‘I am supported by the universe’ or ‘All is good in my world.’ Create your personal affirmations that you feel can best support you.
Stop being a people pleaser. This can be particularly troublesome for women: we want to please and take care of everybody, but forget about ourselves in the process. When you are constantly trying to please people, you are not taking care of yourself. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be there for other people. It simply means that you can be there for them in a more authentic way that feels good to you too while taking care of yourself. Get clear about your vision and values. Get honest with yourself. Create healthy boundaries. Start saying no when you need to and saying yes when you want to. Come from a place of love instead of fear.
3. Women Tribe To Support Women
“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them and it will change your life.” – Amy Poehler
Tribe has become a buzzword in the health, self-improvement and spiritual field and for a good reason.
Whether you are an extrovert or introvert, being a human means that you are a social creature; you need love and support from others. Having people who support you and lift you up can change your life. A tribe of women can nurture and inspire each other. Being part of a tribe, a magical sisterhood, you will feel loved and supported while loving and supporting other women.
But how can you find other like-minded, emotionally intelligent, loving and inspiring women? Thank god for the internet!
First look for groups in your immediate community. You can google ‘sisterhood,’ ‘women’s groups,’ ‘women circles’ and similar words. Look at the bulletin boards at health food stores, cafes and bookstores. Look around at your yoga center, alternative healing practitioner office, community center, library, church and other places in your community. Join workshops and classes that spike your interest. Check meetup for local groups. If you still find nothing to your liking, you can always form your own group: just post it on meetup electronically and on local bulletin boards physically.
There are also many Facebook and other online communities to choose from. These online groups can help you connect with people from all over the world. Don’t be afraid to chat it up with some of the women you are connecting with in the group. It may be a start of a beautiful friendship through Messenger, Skype and Facetime. You may even meet someone in your community who is living in your area.
Did you know that according to the World Health Organization, 60 to 85% of people do not engage in enough physical activity? Trust me, you don’t want to be part of the statistics. Lack of physical exercise can increase your risk of cardiovascular illness, certain cancer, depression, anxiety, a decrease in skeletal muscle mass, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity.
On the other hand, regular exercise can improve your health. It can help reduce your risk of cardiovascular illness, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cancer. It can strengthen your bones and muscles and help you lose and maintain weight. It can improve your mental health, your ability to do everyday tasks and your chances of a long life.
Regular exercise is non-negotiable.
What is enough exercise though? According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, everyone should engage in a minimum of 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (or the combination of the two). For additional health benefits, they recommend doubling the amount.
What if you don’t like exercise or are kind of lazy about it? Maybe you just haven’t found the right form of exercise. There are so many forms of exercises to choose from. You can run, bike, swim, dance, lift weights, do CrossFit, try Zumba, take aerobics, practice yoga, do pilates, play team sports, use cardio machines, try HIIT and Tabata workouts and so on.
If you are the type of person who is motivated by a goal, sign up for a race or a competition. If you like to mix it up, by all means, do different things each day of the week. If you want to save money, go for a run or do at-home-workout videos (YouTube is flooded with quality videos!). If you want to be motivated by others, try a team sport or join a group exercise program. If you need an extra push, hire a personal trainer. Eventually, you will find what works for you and you will fall in love with exercise and its benefits.
5. Get Plenty Of Sleep
How much do you sleep? No, really. Living a busy and stressful life, getting enough sleep can become difficult. However, it is very important to meet your sleep needs.
Lack of sleep can lead to mood changes, trouble thinking and concentrating, weakened immunity, weight gain, a risk of diabetes, a risk of heart disease, low sex drive and weight gain. On the other hand, getting a good night’s sleep regularly can help you to heal your body, maintain your weight, better your mood, lower your stress levels and lower your risk of disease.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7 – 9 hours of sleep each night. However, it is not only the hours, but the quality of sleep that matters too.
How can you make sure you get a good night’s sleep?
Set a regular bedtime and develop a nighttime routine. Make sure to unwind at night. Stop using electronics close at least 1-2 hours before bedtime. This means not checking your emails, browsing Facebook, using your phone or watching movies. Reading a good book, listening to relaxing music, meditating, coloring, journaling and other relaxing activities can help you set up your mood for bed. Try not to eat too close to bedtime and definitely avoid sugary and caffeinated foods and drinks. Choose a nice herbal tea or a cup of warming Organifi Gold instead.
6. Eat Healthy Whole Foods And Superfoods
You knew that you wouldn’t be able to get away without this one, didn’t you? If you want a healthy body, you have to feed it right.
How does a healthy diet look like?
Eliminate processed sugars, processed foods, artificial ingredients and anything else unnatural from your diet. Choose real foods instead, organic as much as possible. Hint: shopping mostly in the produce aisle is your best bet. Eat plenty of leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, pseudograins, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and beans. If you consume animal products, choose organic and free-range and make sure it is only a small part of your diet.
Take probiotics and choose probiotic-rich foods, like saurkraut, kimchi and kefir for gut health. Drink plenty of green juices, green smoothies and make home-cooked meals. Drink 8 glasses of water minimum every day. Eat regularly, slowly, mindfully and listen to your body carefully.
Superfoods are your best friend to boost your health, especially when life gets stressful. Organic superfood powders like Organifi are the best and most economical ways to add superfoods to your diet.
