Why You’re Not Losing Weight Despite Doing Everything Right

A lot of people are doing everything right when it comes to weight loss; they are eating right, exercising, being conscious of stress and eating foods to balance hormones… and yet, they still hold onto stubborn pounds that seem impossible to shed. Or, they are constantly in this cycle of losing weight and putting it back on, never able to stay at the healthy weight they desire.

Some people get to a point and think “I just need more willpower,” but the truth is, willpower isn’t strong enough to get rid of the type of weight they are holding onto. You see, the weight on their body is serving a purpose. By that I mean, their body has subconsciously chosen to hold onto extra pounds because there is a payoff for having the weight:

not losing weight

I see this a lot with women who have had some sort of abuse (physical or emotion) or experienced an intense situation where they wanted desperately to hide. When they had those feelings, their body heard them, as the body always does. The subconscious mind is always listening to our feelings and thoughts and shifting accordingly.

The body can’t physically become invisible so instead it puts on weight as a barrier or protection. So the extra weight you are holding onto? Your body is using it to protect you and make you feel safe. It is there for a purpose, not necessarily because of too much sugar or not enough willpower.

Until the root cause of this weight is addressed, it is almost impossible to lose permanently. Because if you lose the weight without addressing the emotional issues, then the mind experiences some panic, because it no longer feels safe. And the weight comes right back on.

Steps To Releasing Purpose-Serving Weight

We have some tips to help you lose this weight and release the accompanying subconscious emotions.

#1. Stop Making The Weight Your Enemy

Body shaming doesn’t do you an ounce of good. Instead, focus on why the weight is serving you and what its role has been in your life. Think about what the “payoff” is for your body to keep on that weight. What is it protecting you from? What happened in your life that made you want to hide?

Dig deep and try to understand why your body is trying to protect you, keep you from getting hurt or making you feel invisible. What did you tell your body long ago that made it act this way? See it as an act of love by your body. It is trying to take care of you and keep you safe.

Once you make this mindset shift you will start to love and appreciate your body. You will realize that it is NOT the enemy, but rather your most precious ally. Send love to your incredible, powerful, intelligent body and then move on to the next step.

#2. How Do I Get The Payoff In A More Healthy Way?

Once you recognize the purpose your extra weight has in your life, you can work on how to accomplish that purpose in a healthier way. It could be working with a coach or a counselor. Sometimes our own past and pains are difficult to successfully navigate alone. It’s important to dig down to the roots of why you feel you need to be safe or protected so that you can find better ways to soothe those feelings or eliminate them entirely.

You can use positive statements around your home like “I am protected.” “I am safe.” “I love myself.” Use these thoughts to replace old negative thoughts that you have about yourself or the world around you.

Be more vulnerable with your friends and people you can trust. Put yourself out there and prove to yourself that it is safe. Collect safe experiences as evidence that you are OKAY.

As human beings we have a tendency to build up walls and reasons around us why we aren’t safe, why we shouldn’t be vulnerable, why we have to protect ourselves. And this colors how we do everything in our life. I am not saying you will never get hurt again, but you get to realize that you are strong enough to handle anything that comes your way. Instead of being a victim to your reality, you get to become the source, the conquerer, a being of light.

#3. Connect With Your Inner Child

In almost every situation where someone is holding onto weight as a protection, they had an experience as a child that triggered this need. Even if the weight didn’t show up when they were a child, an experience they had put them in survival mode that eventually lead to their body packing on pounds as a shield or barrier.

My favorite tool for connecting with my inner child is a picture of myself when I was 3 years old.

  1. Find a picture of yourself when you were between the ages of 2-5.
  2. Carry it with you everywhere you go, whether that be in your wallet or on your phone.
  3. Whenever you are feeling unsafe or insecure or broken or in emotional pain, pull out that picture and look into your own eyes.

There is something about looking into your own eyes when you were young that elicits a tremendous feeling of compassion. The more you create that feeling of compassion and safety, the less you will feel the need to protect yourself and the easier it will be for the extra pounds to slip away.

It will shift you from being a victim to being empowered.
