Why Your Thyroid Needs Selenium and How To Get It

Selenium is a trace element that rocks a critical role in thyroid hormone metabolism. This bad boy also factors into successful reproduction and how the body copes with stress, oxidative damage and infections… we’ll save those tidbits for another day though. Today we’re going to focus on it’s role in Thyroid Health.
Without enough selenium, the thyroid struggles to convert T4 (storage hormone) into the metabolically active T3 that the body uses. It’s like a key; without it, the hormone produced by the Thyroid is locked up. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have just one key on my keyring and neither does your thyroid. Selenium and Iodine definitely belong on the same loop, so if you’re working with one and your symptoms are not improving, take a look at the other and aim to balance both for better thyroid function.
The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for this superstar comes in at 55 mcg for most people; pregnancy and lactation bumps up the body’s needs to 60 mcg and 70 mcg respectively. The good news is that most Americans already average a daily intake of 125 mcg! But, what’s enough when it comes to selenium? Let’s shine a spotlight on this important element and find out.
Because Selenium is involved in so many metabolic processes, it’s been the subject of many studies. What have the experts found? Well, it seems that there’s a sweet spot with Selenium.
The Nutritional Prevention of Cancer (NPC) study found that 200 mcg of selenium daily decreased total cancer incidence by a statistically significant 25%, but 400 mcg, on the other hand, did not. Higher doses can stimulate the immune system and possibly interact with some medications. The lesson: More is not necessarily better with selenium. Aiming for 100-200 mcg daily is optimal, but always defer to the advice of your trusted medical professional if you are taking medications or have been diagnosed with a medical condition.
