4 Moringa Leaf Benefits Back By Science

Moringa is known in at least 82 countries and has over 200 different names. Historically, it was highly valued by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians for its medicinal properties. The Moringa tree natively grows in the Himalayas.
In 2007, Moringa leaf was recognized by the National Institute of Health as the Botanical of the Year. It is said to have saved more lives in Third World countries than any other plant and has potential to treat over 300 diseases.
Health Benefits of Moringa Leaf
Blood Sugar Balance
Moringa leaf is used to balance blood sugar levels.
An animal study done at the University of Allahabad in India showed that Moringa was effective in lowering blood sugar levels by 26.7% and 29.9%! Moringa is commonly used to treat diabetes in India.
Because there has been increasing attention given to alternative (natural) cancer treatments, studies have begun that investigate herbs such as Moringa oleifera leaves for their potential anticancer properties.
At the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute they performed a study with soluble extracts from the Moringa leaf on lung cancer cells.
“Due to the increasing attention on natural products, such as those from plants, and the advantages of oral administration of anticancer drugs, soluble extracts from M. oleifera leaves (MOL) have been prepared and their potential as new anticancer drug candidates has been assessed in this study.”
During the study they found that Moringa leaf has significant anticancer effects and may kill up to 93% of lung cancer cells in humans!
“… MOL greatly induced apoptosis, inhibited tumor cell growth, and lowered the level of internal reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human lung cancer cells as well as other several types of cancer cells, suggesting that the treatment of cancer cells with MOL significantly reduced cancer cell proliferation and invasion.”
Another study done at a military research center in Saudi Arabia found that Moringa leaf may also benefit those with breast and colorectal cancers.
“…the extracts of leaves and bark showed remarkable anti-cancer properties…This is a novel study because no report has yet been cited on the effectiveness of Moringa extracts obtained in the locally grown environment as an anti-cancer agent against breast and colorectal cancers.
Our study is the first of its kind to evaluate the anti-malignant properties of Moringa not only in leaves but also in bark. These findings suggest that both the leaf and bark extracts of Moringa collected from the Saudi Arabian region possess anti-cancer activity that can be used to develop new drugs for treatment of breast and colorectal cancers.”
According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s website,
“In vitro and animal studies indicate that the leaf, seed, and root extracts of MO have anticancer, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial , antifungal, antiviral, and antisickling effects. They may also protect against Alzheimer’s disease, stomach ulcers, help lower cholesterol levels, and promote wound healing.”
Studies have found that Moringa leaf has impressive antibacterial properties and may be an alternative treatment for infections such as E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S enteritidis.
“The study indicates a promising potential for aqueous and ethanolic Moringa leaf extracts as alternative treatment of infections caused by the tested strains.”
At a prestigious university in Thailand researchers collected leaves of the Moringa leaf to test for antioxidant activity. The results were very encouraging.
“These results confirm that M. oleifera leaves are good sources of natural antioxidant with isoquercetin as an active compound.”
Antioxidants are important for cancer prevention, fighting free radicals, reducing signs of aging and maintaining good health in general.
Moringa leaf is also believed to boost the immune system, increase metabolism and help with weight loss, aid digestion, help with tumors and ulcers and to detoxify the kidneys and liver.
How to eat them:

You can find Moringa powder, moringa pods, moringa seeds and moringa extract in capsules. All are beneficial and contain medicinal properties. Moringa powder can be added to soup. It is most beneficial if added just after the soup has been cooked.
Moringa pods can be boiled, steamed, or fried. Moringa seeds should be eaten when they are young, and can be popped like popcorn or eaten raw. The seeds are known for removing toxins from your bloodstream very quickly, and should be taken in small amounts to avoid unpleasant detox symptoms.
