Why You Should Consider Including A Pet In Your Family

Today was a good day. I just got home from a local pet parade. Playing with puppies and just simply pet watching was fantastic. Let’s not forget about the beautiful cat that was so tolerant of all the children petting her.
Today I wished I had a fur child more than ever. Unfortunately with my traveling, nomadic lifestyle this is not an option. But I will get there. I can already envision holding a little kitten in my hands…
Yep, while my friends are having or planning to have (human) babies, I have no intention of having one soon, but I am dreaming of expanding our family of two with a fur friend.
Though this may not be your main reason for your furry family member, having a pet – especially a cat or a dog – has so many healthy benefits.
1. Having A Pet Improves Your General Health And Happiness
According to the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, cat and dog owners experience higher rates of happiness and general health than non-pet owners. They have less doctor visits, therefore, they save a lot more on doctor bills than they spend on their pets.
2. Pets Can Better Your Cardiovascular Health
Along with your general health, your cardiovascular health in particular can improve greatly just by having a pet. Just owning a cat can reduce your risk of heart attack by 40%, according to the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Neurology and your blood pressure and stress levels can reduce just by playing with your dog, according to the Journal of Behavioral Medicine.
3. Being Around Pets Can Boost Your Immunity
A study at Warwick University in the UK had found that children who were raised with dogs or cats had less allergies, missed less days of school due to illness and had less dermatitis. It’s true that your pets may carry in germs, but being around them – especially growing up with them – can help to build up your immunity as a result.
4. Cats And Dogs Can Boost Your Mood
This is a no brainer. Pets offer unconditional love. They love to be cared for and they also care about you. They show excitement when you come home, are happy when you play with them and curl up next to you when you need some comforting. Having a companion and someone to be responsible for improves your mental health and well-being. Not to mention that they are just so cute, you can’t help but to smile.
5. Pets Can Particularly Benefit The Elderly
Having a pet can bring many benefits to the elderly, including providing loving companionship, increasing the feelings of happiness, as well as improved physical health. It is not surprising that more and more aged-care facilities encourage and organize visitations from dogs for their benefits on both emotional and physical well-being.
