Why You Should Be Walking Everyday

I had a bit of a stressful situation that I was dealing with last week. I’ve been traveling for the past year and a half and sometimes have found myself all alone when dealing with a problem. Life happens. Stress happens. And even though I consider myself an independent person, I still look to family and friends for guidance and support.

My mind was going nuts thinking about the situation, which, in turn, was making my body fill with nervous energy and tension. Do you ever have that feeling where you just can’t relax? No matter HOW HARD you try to calm your mind and body – you just can’t seem to calm yourself down?

Well… that is pretty much where I was at. And I needed to so SOMETHING to alleviate some of the icky feelings.

Considering I am in a foreign country, my support system is thousands of miles away (because really, chatting on the internet isn’t the same as a face to face conversation – even though it helps) and I don’t have a car to get me anywhere… I did the first thing I could think of.


I went for a walk.

And I walked for nearly 2 hours. I soaked in the sun. I took deep breaths. I worked through my thoughts. And I walked some more.

IT FELT GREAT. I felt a sense of calm in my body that wasn’t there prior to walking.

There are countless benefits to walking – even a brief stroll can provide great benefits for your body, your mind and your spirit.

  • Boosts Your Energy A brisk walk boosts circulation and increases oxygen in your blood supply, which will make you feel more alert and alive.

  • Reduces Your Risk Of Disease – Regular exercise (including walking) can reduce your risk of disease by up to 60% (heart disease, diabetes, cancer,  asthma, etc.).

  • Strengthens Your Heart Walking raises your heart rate and gets your blood pumping – which is beneficial to your circulatory system and your heart.

  • Tones Your Body – Walking will strengthen your legs and help tone your butt, calves, hamstrings and quads.

  • Boosts Your Vitamin D – If you take your walk outside and are able to soak up the sun, you will also increase your vitamin D levels. This nutrient plays a big role in your immunity and bone health.

  • Good For Your Brain – Walking has cognitive benefits, can help improve your memory and also enhance your creativity.

  • Reduces Stress – Walking (especially outdoors) can help lower your cortisol level. It also give you time to just BE (to move, breathe and think).

To ensure you are getting the most benefits from your walk, consider the following:

  • Make sure you have comfortable and supportive shoes.

  • Pay attention to your posture and make sure you remain upright (slouching over can create issues with your spine and muscles, which can lead to pain).

  • Breathe deeply – really fill you lungs!

  • Stay Hydrated make sure to carry water or drink an ample amount before and after your walk.
