Why You Should Be Using Brown Sugar In Sugar Scrubs

Written by: Brandi Monasco

Exfoliating your skin on a regular basis is important to keep your skin healthy.

Exfoliation gives your skin the chance to help with the natural skin cell “turnover,” which is when new skin cells replace the dead skin cells. This usually happens every 30 to 40 days on its own, but with exfoliation, you help your skin to better remove the dead, flaky skin cells so that the new skin cells have a chance to grow, which leaves your skin glowing and looking young.

Sugar scrubs are amazing. They leave your skin smooth and soft and feeling renewed. Although sugar is not healthy for you to eat, it is in fact great for your skin. However, using brown sugar in your sugar scrub recipes does a lot more good for your skin than the regular white sugar does.

1. Using brown sugar in a sugar scrub helps with keeping acne at bay. Acne occurs when your pores are clogged with bacteria, causing a pimple or an acne breakout to occur. When you exfoliate your skin, the brown sugar helps to unclog pores and reduces acne breakouts.

2. Using a brown sugar scrub helps to draw moisture into your skin. It can help to moisturize your skin and even be used as a natural moisturizer.

3. Brown sugar helps to remove dead skin cells. It is a natural glycolic acid that aids in removing dead skin cells. It also helps in keeping your skin cool and feeling refreshed.

4. The grains of brown sugar are actually smaller than white sugar or salt. This means that brown sugar can be used in much more delicate areas of your body, such as your face.

5. Brown sugar is also easily dissolved in water. This makes it easier to rinse off than white sugar and it does not leave any residue on your skin. If you are left with residue on your skin, it could lead to pore clogging and eventually acne.

Ready to try your own brown sugar scrub? Here’s a great recipe!

What you need:

  • ½ cup of brown sugar
  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • Optional: About 10 drops of your favorite essential oil

Directions:

1. Mix all ingredients well and store in an airtight jar.

2. When you’re in the shower, use 1 tablespoon as needed. Use a circular motion and lightly scrub your skin with the mixture.

3. Rinse well with warm water.
