The electrolyte, Magnesium, is required by every organ used throughout the human body (mostly the heart, kidneys and muscles), making it a valuable mineral.
Scientists believe that over 300 different chemical reactions require magnesium to properly operate. Our body contains 20 or more grams of magnesium, mostly located in our bones, but it is also found within each one of our organs.
What many don’t realize is that magnesium is required for the conversion of T4 into T3 (super important for thyroid function) so this mineral should be supplemented.
It’s shown that a diet high in refined food and caffeine will encourage magnesium loss. It’s estimated that roughly 80% of the population are deficient in magnesium! The great thing about magnesium is it helps to calm the body and aids in GI function. Detox baths are a relaxing way to get your magnesium fix (1 cup Epsom salt + 1 cup baking soda + 10 drops essential oils) or check out our healthy “soda” recipe and give it a try!
Common deficiency symptoms include depression, eye twitches, insomnia, imbalanced blood sugar, migraines, muscle spasms, tooth decay and unexplained fatigue.
Lifestyle choices such as excessive intake of caffeine or soda pop can deplete magnesium. Antacids, antibiotics, birth control pills and even blood pressure medications can impact magnesium. Additionally, having an unbalanced digestive system will hinder your body’s ability to absorb magnesium.
What researchers know is, calcium, vitamin D and vitamin K2 all work alongside each other, so if you are considering taking a supplement, try to take this into consideration. At the end of the day, if our body is unable to produce magnesium, we must receive it through our food or supplements.
