I’ve been there… 3pm at work… you’re tired… you had to skip lunch and still have multiple hours of work left… then you see it in the break room out of the corner of your eye… DONUTS!

What’s the harm in one or two, you say? Well, my friend, donuts – as well as millions of other foods – contain added sugar. And added sugar is the single worst ingredient in the modern diet.

Added sugar can have harmful effects on metabolism and contribute to all sorts of diseases. Here are a few alarming reasons why you should run away from added sugar as if it were a hungry lion staring you down like piece of meat:

1. Added sugar contains NO essential nutrients and is bad for your teeth.

  • Sugar contains a lot of calories, with no essential nutrients. It also causes tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth.

2. Added sugar is high in fructose, which can overload your liver.

  • Your body does not produce fructose in any significant amount and there is no physiological need for it. Your liver can handle small amounts of it, but large amounts of fructose from added sugars get turned into fat in the liver.

3. Overloading the liver with fructose can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

  • Excess fructose gets turned into fat, which can lodge in the liver and cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

4. Sugar can cause insulin resistance, a stepping stone towards metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

  • When people eat a lot of sugar, it can cause resistance to the hormone insulin, which can contribute to a plethora of diseases.

5. Insulin resistance can progress to type II diabetes.

  • Because of the harmful effects of sugar on the function of insulin, it is a leading driver of type II diabetes.

6. Sugar may give you cancer.

  • There is considerable evidence that sugar, due to its harmful effects on metabolism and inflammation may contribute to cancer.

7. Due to its effects on hormones and the brain, sugar has unique fat-promoting effects.

  • Fructose doesn’t cause satiety in the brain or lower the hunger hormone ghrelin nearly as much as glucose. So you can overload on sugar and never feel satisfied.

8. Sugar is highly addictive.

  • Because sugar causes a large release of dopamine in the brain, it can cause addiction in a lot of people. In fact, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai conducted a study that showed sugar being 8 times more addictive than cocaine… WOW!

9. Sugar is a leading contributor to obesity in both children and adults.

  • Because of the effects of sugar on hormones, inflammation and the brain, sugar dramatically increases the risk of becoming overweight or obese.

10. Fat is not the problem; it is SUGAR that raises your cholesterol and gives you heart disease.

  • Not surprisingly, many observational studies find a strong statistical association between sugar consumption and the risk of heart disease.

Now remember, you can still consume quality sources sugar, but you should limit intake. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day for men is 150 calories per day (36 grams or 9 teaspoons) and 100 calories per day (24 grams or 6 teaspoons) for women. So, let’s all be mindful and cut that sugar!

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
