Why You Need Adaptogenic Super Plants In Your Diet

We all know that “superfoods” are great for your health and that you should eat plenty of them every day. They do wonders for your body such as provide antioxidants, help keep diseases away, provide you with energy and more.

But did you know that there are some superfoods that can help you fight against stress?

The type of superfoods that I’m referring to are called “adaptogens.”

Adaptogens have been around for years, but you’ve likely never heard of them. Their benefits have only recently been discovered and they’re life changing.

Adaptogenic super plants are a group of plants that work wonders for helping the mind and body to fight off stress, colds, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome and so much more!

Adaptogenic plants are classified under three different criteria:

1. They must be safe to eat

2. They must contribute to the overall health of the body

3. They must help create resistance to stress

They work by helping to manage cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone that is responsible for helping the body deal with stress. Hormonal imbalances can be caused by poor diet, illness, or excess stress that cause cortisol levels to become either too high or too low, making you unable to regulate your stress levels properly.

Which adaptogenic plants should you try? All of them are fantastic, however, 2 of these amazing plants stand above the rest.

Rhodiola, also called golden root, is an adaptogenic super plant that has the ability to help maintain your body’s cortisol levels. Managing cortisol levels not only helps you manage your stress, but it also enables you to sleep better and longer. Improper sleep leads to chronic fatigue, stress and a number of other negative health effects and symptoms.

Rhodiola targets the underlying problem. It also has fantastic capabilities in improving cellular energy metabolisms, which in turn improves brain function, contributes to heart health and helps to reduce the effects of depression.

Cordyceps are a type of mushroom that can be found in the Chinese tonic herbal toolbox. Cordyceps contain mycelium, which is isolated and made into a tonic. It is known to help increase mental energy, improve the immune system and strengthen the kidney and adrenal functions, which are essential for filtering toxins from the body and regulating hormone function. Cordyceps are fantastic for improving as well as boosting your immune system.

Some more common adaptogenic plants include:

  • Goji Berries
  • Ginseng
  • Holy Basil
  • Ashwagandha Root
  • Liquorice Root.

 

All of these plants are easy to find, readily available and come with incredible health benefits.

As with all adaptogenic plants, these contribute to lessening stress levels. However, they each come with their own individual benefits. For example, Holy Basil can help you recover from the flu faster. Ashwagandha root is great for relieving arthritis. Ginseng is known for its great waking-up powers for those who have trouble getting out of bed and goji berries are a tasty way to improve your vision.

While diet and exercise are always a great first line of defense against ailments and poor health, they’re never a replacement for a doctor. You should keep in mind, too, that some adaptogenic herbs can be hard on the digestive tract for some people, so introduce them to your diet slowly so you can avoid any potential discomfort.
