If I had to say what the HARDEST thing about changing one’s diet is, I would definitely say CRAVINGS.
I mean, people can have all the desire in the world to change and try their best but when they get hungry and those cravings set in, it is a BATTLEFIELD.
Have you ever wondered…
We’ve all experienced that moment in the middle of a long day where suddenly your body begins to crave something that we KNOW is NOT good for us!
Despite waking up with the best intentions and packing a lunch complete with veggies, hummus and a nutrient-dense salad you find yourself eagerly rushing out to grab something full of empty calories.
Cravings can be super annoying, especially when you are trying to lose weight and adapt a healthier lifestyle!!!
They undermine all your best efforts and preparation.
If you’re like so many of our clients and those in our community, once you give into a craving, the guilt sets in.
And you feel fat, defeated and miserable.
We Are Hard-Wired To Crave High Calorie Foods
Some researchers believe our cravings come from hard-wiring in our brain that was developed hundreds or maybe thousands of years ago. Calories are and have always been necessary for our survival. Many of our ancestors had limited access to food.
Back in the day, the body created CRAVINGS to give our ancestors the motivation to go out and WORK for their food: hunting, gathering, etc.
Thus cravings = motivation = finding food = survival.
High-calorie and high-fat foods were then linked to happiness and contentment in their mind, whether consciously or subconsciously.
Cravings = motivation = finding food = survival = happiness.
New research shows that we experience similar cravings as our ancestors for fat, protein and sugar. The difference between now and then is that PROCESSED foods have been developed that are full of all the WRONG kinds of fats/sugars that undermine our health.
THEY craved these foods because their bodies sensed scarcity and wanted to survive.
WE crave these foods because of other stressors in modern-day life: financial stress, relationship stress, job stress, self-esteem ‘scarcity,’ etc.
Research quoted in The Journal Of Clinical Investigation suggested that the need for COMFORT FOODS may come from as deep as a cellular level.
Like we’ve talked about before… food companies and corporations understand your cravings better than you do!
They’ve created foods with the PERFECT combination of sugars and fats that trigger DOPAMINE to flood your system and keep you coming back for more.
Although these foods are satisfying on an emotional/mental level, most of them contain very little to absolutely no nutritional value. They are filled with chemicals or synthetic additives that were made in a lab, not grown from the ground.
Lots of junk foods are completely COUNTERPRODUCTIVE and fill your body with chemicals and crap ingredients that make you sick and fat!
Our body is built to operate in a slightly more alkaline than acidic state. The pH of our body is measured on a scale of 1-14; 1 being the most acidic and 14 being completely alkaline. The body is meant to be right around 7.4, which is slightly alkaline.
The body THRIVES in an alkaline state. Disease simply cannot survive when the body is at the right pH level.
Unfortunately, most people err on the acidic side!
Our Standard American Diet (SAD) is loaded with acid forming temptations – dairy, sugar, red meat, soda, alcohol, coffee, white-flour products (bread, pasta, pastries), processed food, fast food… you get the idea.
Add to that a stressful lifestyle, lack of exercise, an overabundance of toxic exposure and you’ve got a recipe for pH disaster! It’s not only food that affects your acidic/alkaline balance. Negative/positive thoughts, people, places, interactions, air pollution, EMFs… all of these things have either an acidic, alkaline or neutral effect on the human body.
Your pH shifts regularly and depends heavily on your daily lifestyle – food, mood, stress, sleep, toxins, movement.
A little imbalance here and there may not be a problem, but an imbalance over time can have pretty drastic consequences.
An overly acidic environment is known as acidosis.
Too much acid causes inflammation, which is the root cause of disease.
Acidic food = unhealthy = destructive inflammation.
Dr. Mercola explains it like this:
“Inflammation is a normal and beneficial process that occurs when your body’s white blood cells and chemicals protect you from foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.
…it’s also possible, and increasingly common, for the inflammatory response to get out of hand.
If your immune system mistakenly triggers an inflammatory response when no threat is present, it can lead to excess inflammation in your body, a condition linked to asthma, allergies, autoimmune disease, heart disease, cancer and other diseases, depending on which organs the inflammation is impacting.
Chronic inflammation can be the result of a malfunctioning, over-reactive immune system, or it may be due to an underlying problem that your body is attempting to fight off. Many of these “problems” are actually due to an unhealthy lifestyle.”
Not to mention the fact that an imbalanced pH decreases your body’s ability to repair damaged cells (and the energy production within the cells), remove heavy metals and absorb nutrients, minerals and proteins, which kicks all your efforts with supplementation to the curb.
Too much acidity also contributes to your susceptibility towards fatigue and illness, creating the perfect environment for tumor cells to grow and flourish.
Studies show that having a pH just above 7.4 (alkaline) causes cancer cells to be dormant, while a pH of 8.5 (more alkaline) causes cancer cells to die.
pH is powerful! So keeping yours in check is a must if you want to create the healthiest body and mind possible.
An acidic pH causes the spleen, liver, heart and kidneys to get overworked.
In order to buffer this acidity, the body has to rob existing minerals from the bones and tissue such as calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.
This can lead to chronic conditions such as osteoporosis, loss of muscle mass, kidney stones and impaired muscle functioning.
Well, for starters, we have to rewire our brains.
We have to teach the brain to crave something else. Something better. Something that will nourish and fuel your incredibly intelligent body from the inside out.
We turn to food on autopilot. When we are triggered we are often reaching for unhealthy – easy – foods without giving our choice a second thought.
We have to work on creating an internal alkaline environment.
You HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE. It is going to take creating awareness and making healthy choices based on how you want to FEEL – which I know you want to feel your best.
I want that for you too.
Nothing worth having is ever easy… including optimal health, but I PROMISE your efforts to kick cravings to the curb are worth it.
And it really doesn’t have to be that complicated.
Small steps each day lead to big victories over time so stay the course…
YOU ARE WORTH IT!
Scent has a powerful effect on our emotions.
Studies have shown that inhaling certain aromas can help inhibit our desire to eat. One study found that people who smelled vanilla after eating a healthy lunch experienced less of a craving for a sweet dessert in the following hours!
Find an oil that really speaks to you and keep it with you all the time.
Try peppermint, vanilla, ylang ylang, patchouli and citrus oils like orange, bergamot and grapefruit.
Baking soda has an extremely high pH and helps to change the pH in the body to be more alkaline.
Not to mention, when your mouth is clean, your taste buds don’t have anything to feed off of! Always easier to stop craving something once the taste is out of your mouth.
Following your brushing with a glass of water will further aid in the feeling of being full, decreasing cravings.

I firmly believe that juicing regularly is one of the best things you can do for your health. It’s certainly changed MY life and the lives of thousands… millions… in our community. Not only does a cup of green juice deliver hundreds of micronutrients to your body, but it helps to curb cravings, give you energy, regulate blood sugar, improve your mood and MUCH more.
Focus on an 80/20 ratio – veggies to fruit. This will help bring the body back to balance. If you can handle the taste of that many veggies right at first, work up to it slowly.
With the right ingredients, you can create the proper pH and stave off inflammation and decrease your risk of disease.
It’s the easiest way to get in all of your servings of veggies each day!
When your nutritional needs are met, cravings are squashed. Most people are starving for real food and they don’t even know it!
