What Cravings Are Your Emotions Creating?

If you are struggling with emotional eating, you’re not alone! Hundreds if not thousands of people have faced this problem in their lives. A lot of them try to solve it by willpower alone; after a particularly bad binge they tell themselves they are never eating chocolate again or they are going to stop eating entirely and then try to muscle through it without additional support.

Of course, this rarely works and never leads to a healthy and happy outcome. You see, in the case of emotional eating, willpower alone just isn’t enough.

The reason we emotionally eat is because we are subconsciously trying to heal and/or deal with an emotion through food.

Sweet Cravings = Negative Self Talk

People who have terrible negative self talk often find themselves craving sugar. When you aren’t kind to yourself, you crave sweetness from another source. Chocolate, candy, milkshakes, brownies, cake, etc.

Crunchy/Salty Cravings = Stressed/Angry

When you are angry, stressed or not speaking your truth you might crave crunchy/salty foods that take some chewing. The crunch and chewing action helps to reduce the stress.

Fatty Foods = Unfulfillment

Craving fatty foods usually means there is some area in your life in which you are not getting fulfilled. Relationships, romance, work, etc. There is something missing. Fatty foods are the most filling and this is why they help you feel that you’re filling the place that’s empty inside you.

What Can You Do About It?

It’s entertaining and interesting to learn more about the root cause of your cravings, but what can you do about it? If willpower isn’t enough, what is?

These deep emotional feelings are big and can take time to work with, uncover and process. It is important to look at overcoming emotional eating as a journey, not an immediate destination or a miracle pill. Commit to yourself for the long haul and begin to work on healing from the inside out.

Quiet Your Inner Critic

Thoughts that we think over and over again become like pathways in the forest of our mind. Once we’ve walked on them enough times, they become easier and easier to walk down. Throughout the day when you aren’t living up to expectations you will naturally start thinking thoughts like “I’m not good enough, I’m not smart enough, I’m fat, I’m ugly, I’m mean, I’m impatient, I don’t deserve these good things in my life,” etc.

It will take time to create new thought pathways and commit to taking them instead of your self destructive pathways.

You may think that your inner critic is doing you a favor. But this is rarely if ever the case. Change, healing and true transformation come when we speak to ourselves kindly and fill our own bucket with love. This will be far more motivating and self-empowering than anything negative you say to yourself.

Commit to your relationship with yourself. It might not be easy at first, but at least start with:

  • I am enough.
  • I love myself.
  • I am accepting myself.
  • I am committed to myself.

More than any other thing I’ve changed in my life, the one thing that has been the most important has been my personal relationship with MYSELF.

Fill The Areas That Are Unfulfilled

Look closely at what is making you feel unfulfilled in life. Do you want more love? More creative freedom? More time for yourself? More connection? More vulnerability and friendship? More confidence in your career? Are you just bored? Really dig deep to discover what area you are wanting MORE in. Where are you feeling empty?

Once you know where the empty space is, you can start taking action to fill it. Give yourself a space where you can be creative. Start an art class or sketch on your own in the afternoons. Write a story. Read some fantasy novels. Take time to show yourself love. Focus on connection and really finding those close to you that you can form stronger relationships with. Learn a new skill to improve your resume and confidence. Whatever it is, do it! Commit and take action.

Utilize Your Parasympathetic Nervous System

When we emotional eat we feel out of control and stressed, our emotions and senses are heightened. Often if you can pull your body back into a parasympathetic state it will calm you down enough to the point that the craving will be easier to overcome. How do you do this?

  • Deep breathing. Before giving into your craving, take a few minutes to just breathe deeply all the way down to your toes.
  • Touch. Give yourself some loving touch. Stroke your arm, massage your legs, etc. This is scientifically proven to help.

I hope you’ve found this information useful today. Let us know below what your worst cravings are and how you overcome them.

Remember, we’re in this together.
