Why I Stopped Buying Groceries

Sorry, Mom, but I am officially giving up on trying to cook myself home cooked meals.

Crazy?! I know… but hear me out.

I used to be someone that batch cooked every meal that went in my body.

I was Mr. Tupperware. All my perfectly pre-prepared healthy meals were placed side by side in my fridge, ready for me to eat at a moment’s notice.

Like clockwork, I used to follow the “eat every 3 hours” protocol and batch cooking my food was the only sure fire way to make sure I had healthy meals ready to go when my eating alarm went off (yes, I said eating alarm, please don’t judge me).

I was quite strict with this regimen and used to believe that this was the only way to maintain my healthy eating habits.

Boy, was I wrong…

As I have grown older (and hopefully wiser), I have taken a deeper dive into the research surrounding nutrition and have discovered that, for the average person (you and I), we don’t need to be eating every 3 hours to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

As a matter of fact, that research shows that meal timing has very little effect – if any at all – on our ability to maintain a healthy body weight. If you are interested in winning a bodybuilding competition sometime soon, that’s a different story, but I am going to assume you are like me.

You just want to look good naked.

With this new wisdom about meal timing, I realized I could eat anytime without having to stress, so I started eating out a little bit more.

My good friend myfitnesspal can almost always keep me in the loop about how many calories are in the foods that I eat and, as technology advances, this is becoming more and more easy.

So, when I gained the freedom to eat when I wanted, I started to push the envelope to see how I could make nutrition a part of my life, but not something that consumed my life.

I realized that if I wanted, I could eat once a day, twice a day, ten times a day, but the only thing that really mattered was that I was eating in a calorie deficit and eating pretty healthy foods.

Over months of experimenting, I have seen 3 main reasons why I should stop buying groceries and start only eating out. Below are the reasons that fit my lifestyle – if they resonate with you, beautiful! If you love cooking and couldn’t imagine not making all your meals from home – beautiful! Whatever floats your boat.

Reason One: You Will Be Saving Money.

When I lived in the U.S., I used to spend a couple hundred dollars a week on groceries. Now I just eat two meals a day and some Organifi, which usually costs me in total around $20/day.

A little mental math says that’s a big WIN.

Average savings per week for me is about $50.

Reason Two: You Will Find It Easier To Eat Healthier.

When you train yourself to eat healthy when you eat out, then you will be much less likely to binge when you go to restaurants. I have my go-to meals that I stick to for the most part that guarantee I am going to be eating within my calorie budget for the day. I also have the Organifi to guarantee I get my greens.

On an average day, I will eat two meals after doing intermittent fasting. One meal around 1pm and the next meal around 7pm.

I usually will get myself the equivalent to a chipotle burrito bowl, which costs about $8-9 for meal number 1 and for meal number 2 I will have a salad with some sort of meat and avocado for around the same amount of money.

The Organifi ends up costing me around $1.92 per day.

Disclaimer: I live in Colombia, so sometimes I eat meals for $3-4, but those same meals will probably cost you around $10 in the U.S.

Reason Three: You Will Be Saving Time.

I always like to ask myself a question before I do anything: “Is this the best use of my time?”

For me, cooking was not the greatest use of my time. It was costing me on average 5 or more hours a week to cook and another 5 or more hours to eat all those meals and clean up after myself.

The realization I came to was that I would rather spend my time working on my professional life or going outside and having fun versus spending those 10 hours a week cooking, eating and cleaning.

I am well aware that this article may rub some people the wrong way, but the main reason I wanted to write it was to challenge you to analyze your life and ask yourself the question, “Can I save money, eat healthier and save time eating out?”

If the answer is yes, my question becomes…

What are you waiting for?

Hop on the no-grocery train with me and simplify your healthy life.

This is not to say you will never cook a homemade meal again, but I want to challenge you to analyze you and your family’s current eating regimen to see if taking my advice would be beneficial.

Cheers to the examined life where you challenge the status quo!
