Use Wheatgrass for These 13 Health Problems

By Sara Wylie

If you haven’t heard of this incredible superfood – you’re missing out.

Wheatgrass is one of the most powerful antioxidants out there and is also one of the most potent; in fact, just consuming a single ounce of the stuff is the equivalent to consuming at least two pounds of greens. The uses and benefits of wheatgrass are so vast, there’s not a single person on the planet who wouldn’t benefit from the seemingly plain, simple grass.

Do you know why this grass is so amazing for you? Check out the benefits below and see just how well wheatgrass could slip right into your life!

Improves Digestion

Improved-DigestionFrom heartburn and indigestion to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcers, wheatgrass has a powerful impact on almost any ailment involving your digestive tract. The green strands of grass contain vitamin B, enzymes and amino acids that give its impact such a kick. Mark Rosenberg, M.D., doctor of medicine at Georgetown University, describes a study in his article Wheatgrass Juice Provides You Lasting Relief From Your Digestive Issues that demonstrates the effectiveness of wheatgrass on those with severe digestive issues as well as describes just what it is about the grass that affects the digestive system:

“In one study, patients with ulcerative colitis were given either 3 ounces of wheatgrass juice each day or a placebo. Those receiving the wheatgrass juice saw significant improvements in their symptoms. They had less pain and discomfort and experienced less rectal bleeding.

It’s the high level of enzymes in this juice that helps improve digestion by causing your body to properly break down foods and absorb nutrients. Enzymes are essential to good digestion. Unfortunately, the average American diet is deficient in enzymes. A daily serving of wheatgrass juice can bring your own enzyme levels back into balance and that can do wonders for your digestion.

The high chlorophyll content of wheatgrass juice also helps promote good digestion. Chlorophyll, which is valued for its detoxifying effects, works by removing toxins from the blood and by supporting good liver function. Most importantly for your digestion, it helps to cleanse your bowels. When your bowels are clean, they work better and you’ll notice less gas, bloating and discomfort after eating.”

Medical-Devices-for-the-HeartStimulates Blood Circulation

When even a small amount of wheatgrass is consumed (a shot’s worth in juice form), the oxygen in the bloodstream increases, allowing for better blood flow. You can even use wheatgrass juice topically (on your skin) to help dilate blood vessels and allow more circulation to reach the surface of your skin.

At the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, a study was conducted to test the potency of this effect wheatgrass has on the bloodstream:

“Families of patients [with thalassemia] raised the wheatgrass at home in kitchen garden/pots. The patients consumed about 100 mL of wheatgrass juice daily. Each patient acted as his own control. Observations recorded during the period of intake of wheatgrass juice were compared with one-year period preceding it. Variables recorded were the interval between transfusions, pre-transfusion hemoglobin, amount of blood transfused and the body weight.

A beneficial effect of wheatgrass juice was defined as decrease in the requirement of packed red cells (measured as grams/Kg body weight/year) by 25% or more. 16 cases were analyzed. Blood transfusion requirement fell by >25% in 8 (50%) patients with a decrease of >40% documented in 3 of these. No perceptible adverse effects were recognized.”

Revitalizes The Skin

As mentioned previously, applying wheatgrass to yourself topically can help with circulation. Doing this also can help with skin ailments or unwanted blemishes such as eczema, discoloration, acne and dryness (drinking the juice also aids the skin in these ways).

An observation study done by Dr. Chris Reynolds, M.B., B.S. produced evidence of how wheatgrass so smoothly affects the skin:

“Based on comprehensive scientific evidence and my own numerous clinical observations since 1995, wheatgrass and other cereal grasses appear to be capable of stimulating the activity of human growth factors. This process appears to facilitate natural healing processes such as hemostasis and hemolysis, wound, soft tissue and fracture healing, inflammation, various skin disorders and immune stimulation/modulation.“

The wheatgrass has many biological factors – including chlorophyll – that are able to regenerate skin cells; thus why wheatgrass can have such a visible effect on the skin.

Reduces Fatigue

When you are experiencing constant fatigue, it may mean that your body is deprived of the rest it needs and, when that happens, your immune system loses power as well. Wheatgrass is particularly noted for its high levels of chlorophyll. Most plants that contain chlorophyll also contain oxygen and – according to the writers of hippocrates.com.au –  “the brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly-oxygenated environment.”

The easier your body is able to use and process oxygen, the better it functions and the more energy it is able to produce for itself. This oxidation process also allows for better cell regeneration, which help aid symptoms triggered by fatigue.

One of the key factors in wheatgrass that contributes to this cell regeneration is chlorophyll, the same element mentioned above. Chlorophyll is the main part of wheatgrass that increases your oxygen supply and ultimately helps you retain and gain energy. Arthur J. Patek Jr., M.D. did a study specifically looking into chlorophyll’s contribution to the process of cell regeneration:

“As a working hypothesis, it has been assumed that [bile pigment] aids in the synthesis of hemoglobin by supplying material suitable for the heme portion of the molecule. Because of the similarity of chlorophyll to this pigment, the present study has been made to determine the effect of chlorophyll and its derivatives on the regeneration of hemoglobin in cases of chronic hypochromic anemia.”

He goes on to explain that throughout the study, it became more apparent that greens containing hemoglobin regeneration abilities also commonly contained chlorophyll, a fact that only supports further the effect chlorophyll has on this regeneration essential process.

Further Benefits Of Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is often one of the top things mentioned when the benefits of wheatgrass are discussed. That is because wheatgrass (particularly in juice form) is one of the best chlorophyll sources ever known. Because chlorophyll is such a major part of most everything grown from the Earth, it is often referred to as the basis of all plant life.

Here are some reasons why chlorophyll is such a major part of plantlife and, therefore, our health:

  • Antibacterial chlorophyll-benefits-green-leafy-vegetables
  • Antiseptic (can help with strep, foul odors, varicose veins, chronic sinusitis, etc.)
  • Penetrates and renews body tissues
  • Purifies the liver
  • Combats bacteria
  • Restores fertility
  • Aids blood flow

Additional Benefits Of Wheatgrass

Along with all the benefits described above, wheatgrass has also been known to help cleanse the liver, mend sunburns and wounds, clear the sinuses, stabilize blood sugar, prevent tooth decay, ease arthritis, suppress appetite and even prevent cancer. It is also considered superior as far as mineral content goes, because wheatgrass contains over 90 of the known 102 minerals that are needed by the human body, including calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium.

Wheatgrass can be made into a juice, blended in smoothies in its powder form, used raw, or, if you’re interested, wheatgrass is one of the featured ingredients in Fitlife’s very own Organifi Superfood Greens Powder.organifi-web2
