What’s Calcium Got To Do With Anything?

When we hear calcium, we think “bones” not “thyroid,” right? Truth is, we need to think thyroid and this is why: Calcitonin.

What Is Calcitonin?

Calcitonin is secreted by your thyroid. It regulates the balance of calcium in your bloodstream AND in your bones. Bones, in addition to giving your body structure and shaping a frame for your organs, are also storerooms for calcium. So, when calcitonin goes up, calcium leaches from your bones and enters your bloodstream. When calcitonin goes down, calcium exits your blood and goes back home to your bones. Too much thyroid hormone (aka hyperthyroidism) cranks up the calcitonin and calls calcium out to play. This is one reason why balanced thyroid hormones are critical and why many chronic thyroid sufferers struggle with osteoporosis.

The Culprits

The experts want you to know that there’s an APB out for Calcium Thieves. They’re everywhere, but you can avoid them! On the fugitive list: Stress (YES! Pow! Total eye opener, right? Stress messes with cortisol, which robs the body of calcium), sugar and soft drinks are culprits too, so cuff ’em and put ’em in a place where they can’t hurt you anymore. And for everyone taking thyroid hormone meds, make sure to space calcium supplements or calcium rich foods about 4 hours from the time you take your pills.

Getting Enough

Now, getting enough dietary calcium doesn’t have to be hard. If you’re a dairy do’er, kefir, yogurt, milk and cheese are rich sources of calcium. Non-dairy sources are really where it’s at though (sorry, cows… we still love ya). Cultures with great bone health, cardiac health and the lowest rates of osteoporosis get their calcium from plant based sources almost exclusively. Choose from tasty options like greens, almonds, pumpkin, spinach, seaweeds (arame, hijiki and wakame), broccoli, cabbage, carrots, figs, kale, lemons, oranges, papaya, parsley, sesame seeds, watercress, beans, figs, blackstrap molasses, fermented organic tofu and sweet potato.

We should aim for about 1,000 mg of dietary calcium every day. Try this smoothie for a tasty way to hit your mark today:

The detoxification process can also take in the form of a juice fast.  Here at FitLife.TV, we recommend people to try the Alpha Reset (AR)The Alpha Reset is a 5 Day Juice Fast. It is part of the Juice with Drew System. This is the first step in your detoxification process. If you are just starting out with juicing, do not jump right into a juice fast right away. Just try 1 juice per day along with the rest of your nutrition and see how your body responds. If your body responds well to juicing, then ramp up the number of juices per day. These healthy, nutrient-dense juices can replace that coffee you reach for in the morning or that soda in the afternoon. Here are some of our followers that have tried the Alpha Reset!

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
