What You Should Eat Daily: 6 Foods That Prevent Cancer

Last year, almost 2 million new cases of cancer were estimated and death totals were roughly at 600,000.

There are over 100 different types of cancers, but some of the most common are breast, skin, lung, colon, prostate and lymphoma. According to WebMD, cancer is generally an abnormal growth of cells.

I am willing to bet that you have been impacted by cancer, whether directly or indirectly. Unfortunately, It continues to show its ugly face time and time again.

While we may not have all the answers yet, what we do know is that 70-90% of cancers are caused by lifestyle choices

That means that you and I have the power to do something about it. What you eat is the most powerful 1-2 knockout punch you have in your arsenal. With every bite, you throw jab after jab until you land the big haymaker.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” And based on the research available to us, it’s becoming clearer than ever that he was right!

Here are 6 powerful cancer-fighting foods you should eat daily. 

Mixed Nuts1. Nuts And Seeds

Excellent for a snack, nuts and seeds provide many positive health benefits along with curbing hunger and keeping your blood sugar at bay.

What do flaxseeds, sunflower, pumpkin seeds, almonds and brazil nuts all have in common? Answer: significant amounts of anti-cancer fighting nutrients!

One of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids can be found in flaxseeds. Sunflower and pumpkin seeds contain vitamin B3, E and zinc. Almonds and Brazil nuts are rich in selenium.

Two foolproof ways to add more nuts and seeds to your diet is to make a trail mix or add them to your smoothies (they can add a great texture!).

2. Fatty Fish

You may not know this, but your cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems all rely on omega-3 fatty acids to function. Without them, your cells cannot work at optimal levels.

Try starting off with wild salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, or herring. For lunch, you might want to make a salad with a can of tuna and lemon juice. An additional option would be Salmon en papillote.

If you are going to be bold and go for the sardines, I recommend the in marinara sauce from Wild Planet. It isn’t as fishy tasting.

3. Mushrooms

A recent study suggests that eating a mushroom a day can reduce breast cancer by up to 60-70%. That is mind-blowing!

Crimini mushrooms have a significant amount of CLA (conjugated linolenic acid), a fatty acid that can reduce estrogen production, which may also lower the risk of breast cancer.

There are many different types of mushrooms: reishi (try this tea), shiitake, maitake, oyster, portobello and crimini. You can sauté them in ghee, put them in a stir-fry, mix them with pasta, or even in a frittata. Mushrooms give any dish a great earthy taste.

In my own opinion, they complement garlic quite nicely (I might be bias though, since I am Italian).

4. Purple Foods

If you were to leave your car unprotected from the elements, it would rust. If you do not provide your body with antioxidants, you may contract disease, including cancer.

Antioxidants help protect your body from free radical damage. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that is found in purple foods. Existing studies suggest that resveratrol is beneficial for its potential effect against cancer.

  • Figs
  • Passion fruit
  • Raisins
  • Plums
  • Blackberries
  • Purple asparagus

Scientists believe that the darker the food, the more powerful the antioxidant levels are. Another reason for you to eat more purple foods. You can add them to salads, eat them as snacks, throw them into your smoothies or even juice some of them.

5. Red And Yellow Peppers

You might be thinking how these two colorful peppers made this list. That reason would be the fact that these two peppers are loaded with vitamin C.

1 cup of sliced raw peppers has 157% of your daily value of vitamin C. In addition to being an immune system-booster, they are also a great source for vitamin A, E, B6 and folate.

6. Tea

Catechins may prevent cellular mutations and cancer growth by inhibiting enzyme activities. Additionally, it is believed that they may also be able to repair DNA.

In mice that were fed black and green tea, tumors were decreased in studies of liver, skin and stomach cancer.

There is a great number of different teas out there – black, green, herbal, ginger, etc. Discover which kind suits you best and implement it into your day.
