What You Need To Know About Cellulite – Saturday Strategy
We get messages all the time asking us about this annoying issue…
It’s common… unwelcome… and for some people – maybe YOU – it can lead to holding back from wearing the clothes that make you feel your best because you’re embarrassed! No need to skip bathing suit season and tropical vacations any longer!
Before I dig into the topic at hand, I want to remind you something…
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AS YOU ARE, NO MATTER WHAT! Guys, that includes you too.
I can understand the frustration though. When something is going on that we don’t like and no matter what we try, nothing changes, it can cause insecurity, anger and irritation.
I wanted to be sure to bring you some information to actually help you prevent this annoying skin issue, so I decided that it was time to make a video – this one inspired by a blog post from one of our amazing writers, Lindsay Sibson.
I hear from women – even some men! – nearly every day asking HOW to possibly get rid of, or prevent…
You may be thinking, “Drew, how would you know anything about this?” And you’d be right. I may not deal with this specific issue, but remember, I also started somewhere – 40 pounds overweight, tired and sick of living a mediocre life. So yea, I DO get it, in part. And half my team is made up of women – not to mention the coaches and others in the community that I am constantly talking to about these things, simply because I want to learn HOW to help YOU become the best YOU possible.
Are you sick of looking in the mirror, feeling defeated and wondering where time has gone?
Are you worried that your partner is looking at other people instead of you?
Are you stuck holding onto the last 10 pounds, confused on what to do – you’ve literally tried EVERYTHING!
You’re not alone.
People of all shapes and sizes deal with it. Like it or not, it’s a common problem in the lives of many. But the good news is there are some tips that may help you rid yourself of this, or at least diminish the appearance to leave you feeling more confident in your skin.
What You Need To Know About Cellulite
WHAT Is It?
Cellulite is when your skin appears dimpled and lumpy as a result of underlying fat deposits. It happens when collagen fibers that attach fat to your skin tear. To learn more about what cellulite is, watch this video.
According to ABC News, cellulite affects around 90% of women and 10% of men at some point in their life! Even people who may look slim and trim and seemingly “perfect’ at first glance probably have it hiding somewhere.
As women AGE, estrogen starts to decrease. A chain reaction of this is decreased circulation, especially in the thighs and outer extremities. When circulation decreases, so does oxygen and nutrition. When these decrease, so does collagen production.
Collagen is a structural protein that is important for the connective tissue in your skin. When you don’t have enough of it, fat deposits push through the skin and become visible. Hello, cellulite!
WHY you may have it and WHAT you can do about it
1. It’s In Your Genes: If your mama has it, you are more prone to cellulite as well. It may not be to the same degree or in the same areas, but the verdict is you’ll be shakin’ what yo’ mama gave ya.
According to researchers at the University of California Los Angeles, how much weight you gain and cellulite you end up with may depend in large part to genetics! Thanks a lot, mom.
Lucky for those of us with less-than-ideal genes… lifestyle and diet may play an even larger role in weight gain and overall health.
According to cardiologist Donald Lloyd-Jones, “…for most people, a healthy lifestyle trumps inherited risk.”
2. It’s More Common In Women: The skin make up of women is designed in a fashion that makes it easier for fat pockets to develop (parallel, pillar-like rows). Men’s skin has more connective and supportive tissue, which helps keep cellulite from appearing.
Unfortunately, we are seeing an increase of cellulite in YOUNGER women. Why is this? Scientists are blaming it on estrogen dominance, a phenomenon that happens when the body produces too much estrogen OR when an individual is eating foods that contain or being exposed to estrogen mimickers.
An estrogen mimicker is some type of ingredient that acts as estrogen in the body. They have been shown to actually ALTER hormones and mess with the natural balance of hormones in your body! Studies have found that these may increase risk of obesity, breast cancer and reproductive abnormalities.
The term – Estrogen Dominance – is also related to the ratio of estrogen to progesterone in the body. Even if you don’t have “too much” estrogen in terms of your actual number, when in correlation to progesterone, this balance is crucial for healthy hormone function, including fertility.
Common estrogen mimickers include:
- BPA (found in some plastic)
- Parabens (used in 75%-90% of cosmetics!)
- Phthalates (found in water bottles, soaps, plastics)
So if you are working to reduce and/or prevent cellulite, work to remove these from your diet and environment.
3. Drink Water: Being hydrated improves the texture of your skin, which can reduce the appearance and prevent further formation of cellulite. Yet another important reason to tip back a glass of H2O!
Eating fresh produce is also an effective way to get your daily water need! A study in Japan found that women who ate plenty of water-filled foods like fruits and veggies had less fat (and thus less cellulite) and also smaller waists and lower BMIs than women who only drank water and didn’t eat many fruits and veggies.
Foods with the highest water content (over 90%!) include:
- Green peppers
- Star fruit

4. Exercise: Building muscle reduces the appearance of cellulite. Therefore, perform exercises that target your butt and legs. Here are the 3 best exercises to target cellulite.
In countries where people go to work and burn significant amounts of calories, cellulite doesn’t seem to be so much of an issue. A large percentage of Americans, however, are going to work and sit at a desk. I’m not saying you should go a quit your desk job… but make sure you are countering all those hours sitting with hours of standing up and moving!
Try walking, running or biking to work every day. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Using a standing desk instead of a desk and chair (Dr. Mercola has replaced all of his employees traditional desks with stand up desks!). Make time to go to the gym or to fun classes that get your blood pumping. Join a local sports team or plan long bike rides or hikes on the weekends. Movement is life!
5. Embrace Your Natural Glow: Spending too much time in the sun (or a tanning bed) makes the appearance of cellulite worse. The UV rays damage the collagen in your skin and causes cellulite to become more noticeable.
6. Food Fight: Certain foods can help your battle against cellulite. Eating foods that are high in healthy fats will stimulate fat loss in your body. Eat the following foods in moderation: avocados, nuts, seeds, olives, sardines, coconut oil, olive oil. For even more ideas, here are more foods that fight cellulite.
If you want to improve the appearance of cellulite, consistently follow the above methods and tips and watch those dimples start to disappear.
