What To Do When You Have A Sinus Infection 

To me, there is nothing worse than having a sinus infection. The stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, it’s all just plain miserable.

At least 37 million Americans have a sinus infection once a year.

A sinus infection, or often referred to as sinusitis, is an extremely common condition that occurs when your sinuses and nasal passages become inflamed. They can also become clogged with mucous, causing even more irritation.

Your sinuses are a connection of hollow cavities in your skull, mainly within your face. They are located behind your cheekbones and stretch across the lower center of your forehead. When your sinuses become inflamed, that is when a sinus infection occurs.

There are two types of sinus infections:

1. Acute sinusitis that usually does not last longer than eight weeks and does not occur more than three times a year. An episode of an acute sinus infection does not last longer than 10 days at a time.

2. Chronic sinusitis lasts longer than eight weeks and occurs more than four times a year. The symptoms usually lasts longer than 20 days at a time.

Sinus infections can be caused by many things such as allergens, bacteria, viruses, even the common cold. Having a sinus infection is miserable at times and can often include these symptoms:

  • Postnasal drip
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Tooth pain or sensitive teeth 

And while you are probably wanting to run to the doctor for a prescription of antibiotics the moment that these feelings hit you, there are a few natural ways you can use that can kill that sinus infection!

The 20-Second Trick

1. Push your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

2. At the same time, press your thumb between your eyebrows

3. Hold the pressure for 20 seconds.

4. Release after 20 seconds.

      • When you release the pressure, the vomer bone that is located in your nasal cavity will vibrate. This vibration will clear your sinuses and help drain your throat and nose. 

5. Repeat this process every hour or so as needed.

Flush Out Your Nasal Passages

The best way to flush out your nasal passages is by using a neti pot. This is a little pot that is designed to be used in your nose to help flush the gunk out. You create a saline rinse using salt water and warm, sterile water (this means not using water straight from the faucet!). According to Dr. Payne, “Saline washes have been studied and proven to be effective and should be the first line of defense against sinusitis.”

Stay Hydrated

Being hydrated is a necessity for your overall health, but when you are suffering from a sinus infection, it is even more important. Staying hydrated helps to keep your sinus cavities and nasal passages moist. It is best to drink water throughout the day and to say away from alcohol or caffeinated drinks. The best rule of advice, as always even when you are not sick, is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day.

Humidify

Just as staying hydrated can help keep your sinus cavities and nasal passages moist, humidifying your room can do just the same. Keeping the air moist will help your sinuses drain as they should. Having air that is too dry can make the mucous clog up your sinus cavities and nasal passages. You should also make sure that the humidifier is clean before using.

Use Spices

Eating spicy foods such as hot peppers and horseradish can help clear up your sinuses. Hot peppers such as chili peppers, are filled with capsaicin which helps to clear mucous from your stuffy nose.
