What To Do To Combat Your Next Headache

Sometimes headaches are just unavoidable and they might even come on suddenly and without any warning. Stress and noise are major causes of headaches as well as certain foods such as processed meats or foods that contain nitrates; poor posture, skipped meals and even changes in your sleep habits or lack of sleep can be headache triggers too.

Americans spend close to a billion dollars per year on over-counter medications and prescriptions to find something that will alleviate their headaches. Oftentimes, those pain relievers can carry some serious health risks and can eventually lead to liver disease if you take too many of them over a period of time.

The next time you have a headache, don’t reach for the pain reliever bottle. Instead, reach for some of these herbal remedies!

#1. Magnesium. In order for your body to stay healthy, your body needs an adequate amount of magnesium. It is essential for muscle and nerve function as well as keeping your bones healthy and supporting your immune system. When magnesium is taken daily, it can help reduce your chances of having a headache or a migraine. Research shows that when your brain is low on magnesium, it can induce a migraine.

Natural sources of magnesium:

  • Nuts and seeds
  • Bananas
  • Green vegetables
  • Legumes

#2. Vitamin B2. Also called riboflavin. One use of vitamin B2 is to help increase your energy levels as well as produce energy for your nerve cells. Vitamin B2 is also an antioxidant that aids in the removal of free radicals from your body. As with magnesium, having enough vitamin B2 in your body can help reduce the occurrences of headaches and migraines.

Natural sources of vitamin B2:

  • Mushrooms
  • Organ meats
  • Almonds
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel sprouts

#3. Calcium. This mineral is important for building your bones and keeping them healthy. It is also responsible for helping your blood clot when you have a cut or wound. Calcium contains antispasmodic properties. These properties help in alleviating migraines and headaches. As with magnesium, having a low level of calcium can cause headaches and migraines.

Natural sources of calcium:

  • Bok choy
  • Okra
  • Green beans
  • Dark leafy greens
  • Almonds
  • Fish

If you are someone who is prone to getting headaches or migraines, or even if you do not normally get headaches, here are a few tips you can do to ensure that you can avoid getting a headache:

1. Drink water. Being hydrated is essential to your health and dehydration can lead to a headache. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day (a least half your bodyweight in ounces).

2. Manage your stress. Stress is something that is hard to avoid, so it’s important that you learn how to manage it. Try a new hobby or do yoga or meditation when you feel stress coming on.

3. Get the right amount of sleep. Getting too much and even too little sleep can cause a headache. Make sure that you are getting the right amount of sleep that your body requires.

Making the right lifestyle and even dietary changes is a lot less stressful and painful than dealing with a headache. Start those changes today to avoid tomorrow’s headache.
