What To Do If You Get Earaches

Winter is quickly approaching and in many parts of the country, there will be snow covering the ground in just a few short weeks. With winter comes the cold snow, the chilly winds and the dreaded earaches.

While an earache can appear on its own, it can also be a symptom of another illness such as tonsillitis, TMJ disorder and even a sinus infection. The most common cause of earaches for both children and adults is a clogged eustachian tube, which are the tubes that lead from the back of your throat to the middle ear.  No matter what the cause may be of your earache, they seem to be the most annoying little pains that you can get.

If you are one of the many people who get these annoying earaches, there are several remedies that you can do to relieve that ache.

  • Sit Up. Sitting up for a few minutes, mainly before laying down for the night, can help your eustachian tubes to drain. When they are allowed to drain, this reduces swelling. Reducing the swelling in your ears helps to ease the pain. At night, prop your head up on a pillow while you sleep so your ears can keep draining.
  • Use Cold Compresses. Just like applying ice to an external wound, the same can be done for an earache. Use an icepack or a cold, damp washcloth and hold it to the ear for about 20 minutes. The cold from the compress helps to numb your ear and can reduce any inflammation.
  • Garlic. Using garlic helps to fight off infections in your body and it has been used as a natural remedy for earaches for many years. The compound in garlic, called allicin, helps to fight infections that could be causing your earache. To use garlic to fight against an earache,  mash a few cloves of garlic, place them in a cloth and dab it on the infected ear.
  • Chew Gum. Many people know that, if you are prone to getting an earache when you fly, you should chew gum so that your ears can stay open. But did you know that it also works at night time too? Just the muscular action of chewing a piece of gum can open the tubes in your ears, causing the pain of your earache to reduce. 

If you are prone to getting earaches, the most important thing to remember is to NEVER stick anything in your ear. While your mother or grandmother may have told you this while growing up, it is very important that you remember this. Sticking anything in your ear can cause you to tear your eardrum, which is not only extremely painful, but can risk damaging your hearing as well.
