What Do Your Hiccups Mean?

Hiccups are the worst. They come at unexpected times and are just simply annoying. But why do they happen? Let’s find out.
According to an old wives’ tale in my native country, Hungary, you hiccup when someone is thinking about you. Though I take comfort in believing that my grandmother – who used to remind me of this explanation – is thinking about me somewhere, the truth is much less mysterious.
Hiccups and other odd body sensations happen because of your body’s natural defense mechanisms.
Hiccups happens when you eat too quickly, overeat, or perhaps swallow large pieces of food at once. Your pneumogastric nerve – which is close to your stomach and diaphragm – becomes irritated. This irritation leads to hiccups.
Besides hiccups, your body has other defense mechanisms.
Yawning doesn’t only happen because you are tired. It happens because your brain is the literal tired one. Yawning helps your brain to cool down when overworked or overheated.
Sneezing happens when your nasal passages fill up. It can be because of various things, including microbes, dust, allergens, or other irritants. Sneezing helps you airways to clear up.
Stretching is not only a good habit, but is also an instinct. Stretching prepares your body for the day, prepares your muscles to work, restores blood flow and even improves your mood. No wonder it feels so good to stretch in the morning.
Memory loss is another defense mechanism that can happen due to an unpleasant experience. Your brain simply wants to protect you from an event that way painful or upsetting in one way by erasing it from your memory so it doesn’t come up again.
Goosebumps occur when your cold in order to reduce the amount of heat your body loses through your skin. Yes, your goosebumps are there to keep you warm when you forget your jacket.
Tears are there for your as a protection, as well as a distraction. When you are experiencing a stressful situation, your body creates tears as a new source of irritation to distract your from your pain. They are also there to protect your eyes’ mucous membrane from any foreign objects, such as dust.
Your body is magical. From tears to hiccups, it’s producing all kinds of interesting things to keep you happy, healthy and comfortable. I am truly thankful for my body. Aren’t you for yours?
