Warning: Keep This Type Of Cookware Away From Pregnant Women!

Eliminating certain chemicals in non-stick cookware has lead to less health damage in fetuses and newborns.

Since 2003, there have been major governmental and industry efforts to phase out certain chemicals used in some non-stick coatings, like Teflon. According to a recent study based on new mothers’ blood samples published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health, this has prevented over 118,000 low-weight births and related brain damage in the U.S. alone. That’s absolutely major!

Past studies have linked several chemicals that keep your food from sticking to pans to various birth defects, lower-than-normal birth weight and high blood pressure. Eventually this lead to an agreement between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and American manufacturers to eliminate these harmful chemicals from production over the past three years.

The study has found that dropping these chemicals hasn’t only saved babies from health issues, cognitive damage and need of long-term care, but has also saved the U.S. at least $13.7 billion in infant hospital stays and improved the prospects of the future generation obtaining a happy and healthy life and achieving higher education and better jobs.

What chemicals have caused health damage?

The main danger to fetuses and pregnant women came from a coating called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical does not occur naturally in the environment and even one-billionth of a gram (nanogram) exposure can increase the risk of low birth-weight, or anything less than 5.5 pounds. PFOA can cause other health damage as well, for example according to some studies, it may interfere with natural hormone function.

All the dangers of PFOA and related chemicals are still unknown. Researchers say that the detrimental health effects seen in original nonstick chemical formulation warrants further testing for safety and continuous research.

Though the use PFOA has been eliminated, there may still be some old and unsafe products on the market and even more likely in your kitchen. To keep your children and your family safe, get rid of any old and possibly harmful nonstick cookware and buy new, safe, non-PFOA cookware instead.

What else can make you and your children sick (and what to do about it)?

Besides your cookware, other exposure to indoor chemicals and environmental toxins can make you sick at home.

  • PVC plastic – PVC plastic in your shower curtain, raincoats, makeup bag and so on can create health problems. Make sure to buy PVC-free products and avoid plastic altogether whenever it’s possible.
  • Mold – Mold in your home can lead to serious allergies, asthma and chronic health issues. To avoid mold, ventilate your home and dry any wet surfaces to prevent mold growth. For serious mold-removal jobs, consult a professional.
  • Dirty air ducts – Cleaning out your air ducts is crucial to remove toxic fumes from your home as they can lead to allergies, sinus issues, asthma, fatigue, dizziness and other health issues. Turn to a professional for a deep cleaning.
  • Scented candles – They may smell nice, but many candles and air fresheners contain petroleum distillates, formaldehyde, limonene, alcohol and esters that can lead to allergies, coughing, stuffiness and headaches. Stick with organic alternatives and healing essential oils instead.
  • Interior paint – Old paint fumes from higher VOC paints are one of the major sources of toxic fumes that can lead to asthma and allergies. Stick with no-VOC paints for your home – they look the same, but are not harmful to your health.
  • Radon gas – It’s crazy to know that according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 1 in 15 homes have elevated levels of radon gas, a radioactive material from the ground beneath homes that leads to about 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year. Find your state radon contact for a special testing kit to make sure your home is safe.

 

Using safe cookware free from harmful chemicals, like PFOA and eliminating other environmental toxins, including mold, PVC plastic, dirty air ducts, scented candles, interior paint and radon gas, are important ways to ensure your health and the health of your babies, children, adult family members and pets.
