Want The Secret To Finding The Best Workout Routine?
By Lindsay Sibson
The time has come! You are going to “do it” this time. It is time to get healthy and fit. You have scoured the internet and found a free 12 week fitness program and think to yourself, “this is going to work. I can do this!”
Then Day 1 rolls around, you set out to conquer your workout and three exercises in, you feel like you are about to pass out.
“Okay, maybe this isn’t going to work…”
It can be discouraging when you start a new exercise program and quickly realize that it is nearly impossible to keep up with the professional’s pace. When you see the instructor easily do 10 pushups while you focus on not breaking your face on the floor because your arms are going to give out, it can leave you feeling pretty down about your fitness (or lack thereof).
Therefore, set your OWN pace. Your health and fitness is a NOT a 12 week endeavor… it is a lifetime of making choices and taking actions that benefit how you look, feel and think. Perhaps one day you will be rocking those pushups, but if today is not that day, then find a pace and process that works specifically for you and your goals.
The key here is to create a personalized program that is achievable, enjoyable and something that you can realistically maintain. As you grow and increase your strength and fitness, continue to challenge yourself by adding in more difficult and complex exercises.
Take the pushup for example. If you are newbie at fitness, start with a wall push up, then progress to a push up on a bench or chair, then your knees, then finally to a regular push up. Focus on your form and properly doing the exercise to avoid injury.
Each exercise should be challenging enough to cause your muscles to work… but not TOO hard where you won’t be able to move properly the next day. It may take some experimenting to find what works for you, but once you find a personalized routine that gives you a great workout and that you enjoy – it will make it a heck of a lot easier to be consistent and make it a lifestyle change and not just a temporary “thing” that you are doing.
If you are just getting started (or maybe starting again), take the time to do a little research on fitness, nutrition and developing a strong and healthy mindset. Some great starting points are:
It is all about getting your body moving and fueling your body with fresh and nutrient dense foods, such as vegetables and fruits. If you currently do not have a health and fitness routine, here is an excellent starting point for a morning routine that you can adapt and change to fit your personal preferences and lifestyle:
1. Wake up and drink at least 16oz of water with freshly squeezed lemon.
2. Get outside and walk for 20 minutes – breathe deeply and visualize your day ahead.
3. Stretch and do 3-5 exercises using your bodyweight.
4. Eat a “clean” breakfast (when you are hungry).
5. Include 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil for some healthy fats.
6. Consume freshly chopped fruits and vegetables.
