Victory! World’s Largest Spice Company To Go Organic And Non-GMO by 2016
Written by: Lindsay Sibson
Your pinch of pepper and sprinkle of cinnamon are about to become a WHOLE lot healthier!
McCormick, the largest spice company in the WORLD, has committed to making most of their products organic and non-GMO by 2016!
Along with this momentous announcement, McCormick has also proposed the following changes:
- 80% of its product will be organic and non-GMO.
- 70% of its products will have new non-GMO labels.
- There will be an introduction of a new non-GMO vanilla extract.
- Many of their herbs and spices are currently non-GMO, but not labeled accordingly – this will be updated.
McCormick’s intentions are to increase transparency of their ingredients as well as compete with other organic and non-GMO companies, such as Simply Organic.
McCormick is the world’s largest spice provider and wants to maintain its market share. Since there is growing consumer interest in healthier choices, McCormick is swiftly making the shift!
Is McCormick A Healthier Option?
It is not yet the healthiest option on the market, even though the company is currently making strides to “clean up” their products, though by next year, they will certainly be up there in the ranks! Completely organic and non-GMO options right now include Simply Organic and Frontier.
When choosing spices and herbs, it is safest to select companies that DO NOT use irradiation (using radiation to make spices “more safe” by killing bacteria). It is a controversial process and, the less your food ingredients are “processed,” the BETTER!
McCormick does NOT use irradiation, which is an even greater bonus. Instead, McCormick uses steam treatments that preserve more of the health benefits of the herbs and spices.
It seems the world of spices and herbs is taking a turn for the better. Go ahead and safely spice up your life by choosing organic and non-GMO spices and herbs!
