If the only time you see basil is when it has a starring role in your kitchen on Italian night, take a minute or two with me and learn how basil can benefit your complexion and your luscious locks!

For centuries, basil has been used as a medicinal herb in salves, ointments, poultices and teas to support wound recovery, digestive issues, respiratory health, cardiovascular health and to calm fevers, anxiety and headaches.

Lucky for you, the things that make basil so amazing for your insides also ROCK for your skin and hair!

What Makes Basil So Great For Skin And Hair?

  • Vitamins And Minerals

Basil is rich in vitamin K, manganese and magnesium. 2 tablespoons of fresh basil provides ⅓ of your RDA of vitamin K, which supports normal blood clotting, bone density and healthy cellular growth.

The beauty buzz around vitamin K is that it helps with skin elasticity (reducing fine lines and wrinkles) and promotes great circulation (reduces dark circles under the eyes and any broken capillaries).

  • Antioxidants

The antioxidants in basil work to combat the free radical damage that causes aging. One antioxidant in particular known as beta carotene works to normalize skin pigmentation, helps moisturize the scalp and stimulates hair follicles for great hair growth; beta carotene is a common skin care ingredient and there’s an abundant amount in fresh basil.

  • Anti-Bacterial

The antibacterial compounds in basil (and the essential oil) shield your face from unwanted bacterial growth that can be a cause of acne and blackheads. Systemically, basil is effective against many bacteria, including staphylococcus aureus.

  • Anti-Inflammatory

Basil is rich in anti-inflammatory and pain relieving eugenol. The herb can help soothe eczema and rashes and can help you find relief from itching and burning sensations.

Now, be sure to check out these 3 Easy Basil Body Care Recipes below so that you can start experiencing the benefits of basil today! Let us know how it goes and if you have any other favorite ways to use basil, feel free to share with us as well!

3 DIY Recipes For Skin And Hair

Face And Scalp Toner/Splash*

Ingredients:

  • 5-6 fresh basil leaves (or 2-3 tablespoons dried basil or 5 drops basil essential oil)
  • 1 cup boiling water

Add-ins For Scalp Treatment:

  • 10-15 fresh peppermint leaves (or 2 drops peppermint essential oil)
  • 1 tsp fresh rosemary (or 1 tbsp dried rosemary or 2 drops rosemary essential oil)

Directions For Use:

1. Make basil tea by steeping 2-3 tablespoons of dried basil or 5-6 tablespoons of fresh basil in a cup of boiling water. After 20 minutes, strain the liquid and cool completely.

2. If you are using the essential oils, simply add them to cool water and proceed. If you use fresh or dried herbs and essential oils, steep the herbs in boiling water first, then add any essential oils once the mixture has been strained and cooled.

3. For a skin treatment, try pouring the liquid into a spray bottle for use as a refreshing spritz or put a spoonful into the palm of your hand and pat it on your face as a splash. You can also soak a cotton ball in the cooled tea and apply it that way to your face for spot treatment.

4. For a scalp treatment, use the liquid as a final rinse after shampooing. Slowly pour it over your scalp, making sure to distribute it evenly. Take a few seconds to gently massage the scalp with your fingertips.

*AVOID getting this in your eyes!

Facial And Body Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 5 fresh basil leaves (or 3 drops basil essential oil)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • ¼-⅓ cup fine sea salt or fine sugar

Directions For Use:

1. Use a mortar and pestle or the back of a wooden spoon to make the basil into a paste. Add the sugar or salt a little at a time to make this process easier. Finish by mixing in the coconut oil.

2. This scrub can be used gently on the face and neck or as an all-over body scrub. The amount of sugar or salt and coconut oil can be adjusted to make a bigger batch.

Easy Basil Leaf Blemish And Blackhead Mask

Ingredients:

  • 2 fresh basil leaves

Directions For Use:

1. Gently rub the leaves with your fingers to get the oils to start to release. Wet the leaves by dipping them in warm water and then apply the leaves on your nose or T zone to help with blackheads and acne. The leaves should stick nicely to your skin.

2. You can leave the leaves in place while you get ready in the morning or while you watch your favorite sitcom. Remove sooner if you feel any irritation!

Bonus Tip:

  • Apply wet basil leaves under your eyes to calm puffy eyes and reduce dark circles.

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
