Use This Easy Trick To Lose Weight Quick

‘Tis the season of needing to unbutton your pants at the dinner table, overeating delicious holiday meals and cheers-ing to a brand new year.

While there may be joy in the air, one thing I doubt you will be celebrating are those few extra pounds around your middle.

Drink a pint of water BEFORE you sit down to eat every meal!

According to research published in Obesity, simply drinking water BEFORE your meal may help you lose weight!

The Study

  • 84 obese adults participated in a 12-week-long study.
  • Each participant received an in-person weight management consultation, in which the researchers randomly advised them to either:
    • Drink a pint of water 30 minutes before eating – “preloading” (half of the participants).
    • Imagine themselves with a full stomach BEFORE they sat down to eat (the other half of the participants).
  • To monitor the participants that went on their water ritual, researchers used “several measures of adherence… including 24 hour total urine collections.”

Two weeks later, each participant had a follow up phone consultation. Here is what was discovered…

The Results

On average, participants in both groups lost weight throughout the 12 weeks. However, the participants who drank water BEFORE their meal lost at least 3 MORE pounds than the participants who imagined a full stomach.

The participants who said they always drank before each meal lost about 9.8 pounds, while those who only drank once a day or not at all only lost 1.76 pounds.

That’s a pretty vast difference!

“When combined with brief instructions on how to increase your amount of physical activity and on a healthy diet, this seems to help people to achieve some extra weight loss  — at a moderate and healthy rate,” said lead author Dr. Helen Paretti of the University at Birmingham.

“It’s something that doesn’t take much work to integrate into our busy everyday lives.”

Other Promising Research

Though this study is just a start, there is other research that supports the notion of “preloading.” In 2013, a study in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition found that people who “preloaded” before a meal with water or nutritional foods (yogurt or salad) had a substantial decrease of weight over a period of three months.

Researchers are striving to confirm their findings by conducting a more large-scale trial. This simple little water trick has major potential to help those fighting with their weight.

“Losing a few extra pounds over the course of a year can be significant to an individual and this could be an easy way to help with that weight loss,” Paretti said. “It’s a simple message that has the potential to make a real contribution to public health.”
