The birds are chirping.

The bees are buzzing.

The flowers are blooming.

Spring is in the air.

And… Pollen.

More than 50 million Americans suffer from different sorts of allergies each year. Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illnesses and costs individuals over $18 billion a year.

Some people suffer year round with allergies while some only suffer during the spring or early fall, which is called seasonal allergic rhinitis. This happens when flowers are blooming and pollen is being dispersed into the air.

An allergy is described as “a heightened sensitivity to a foreign substance.” The allergen causes your body’s immune system to overreact when it is defending itself against the foreign substance.

“Allergens can stimulate an immune response when you breathe in or touch the allergen, or by ingestion of food or beverage, or from injections of medication.”

A pollen allergy is when your immune system works too hard to defend off pollen that enters your system. “Pollen is a very fine powder that comes from trees, grasses, flowers and weeds.” The winds and the birds carry pollen from plant to plant, which fertilizes each plant. Being outside, we inhale the pollen and for someone that has a pollen allergy, their allergy symptoms start.

Pollen allergy symptoms can include:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Itchy and watery eyes
  • Wheezing (can be worse if you have asthma)
  • Nasal congestion
  • Itchy or sore throat
  • Itchy skin
  • Fatigue
  • Hives
  • Headaches

If you have allergies, essential oils can help you breathe a little easier and for me, they have also relieved headaches caused by allergies. Before you head to the nearest drug store to stock up on antihistamines, grab an essential oil, it might just do the trick.

Here are 3 of the most effective essential oils to use against springtime allergies:

1. Lavender – This oil is a natural antihistamine. It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Lavender not only helps to alleviate the symptoms of allergies, but the scent is also calming, which eases nerves and can help with headaches. Studies have also shown that using lavender essential oil helps with suppressing inflammation in the airway.

2. Peppermint – This oil also has anti-inflammatory properties. It acts as an expectorant and can help relieve scratchy throats, coughs and sinusitis. It can also help reduce phlegm. Studies have shown that using peppermint oil can alleviate spasmodic activity, which are contractions that cause you to cough.

3. Eucalyptus – This oil reduces the symptoms of allergies and improves circulation by opening up the sinuses and the lungs. It contains citronellal, which works as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory as well as an expectorant. Studies have shown that eucalyptus helps improve air flow when it is inhaled. You will feel a cold sensation that helps to improve airflow in the nose.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways:

  • Apply them directly to your skin. Be sure to first dilute the oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, as most oils can be very potent. Applying oils without diluting can cause skin irritations, especially if you have sensitive skin. Dab a little bit on your forehead, cheeks and chest.
  • Diffuse in an oil diffuser and place by your bed at night.
  • Add a few drops of essential oil into a warm bath and soak for a bit.
  • Apply 1 or 2 drops to the palm of your hands, cup them over your nose and take slow deep breaths.

If you wish, you can also create an allergy blend using these three essential oils: Combine 2 to 3 drops of lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil and massage into your temples, behind your ears and onto the bottom of your feet.

Having allergies can be miserable whether you suffer from them all year or just part of the year. Before you go out and stock up on allergy medications or spend the time and money seeing a doctor, try using one or all of these essential oils. Their effectiveness may surprise you!
