I may not have my own children yet, but let me tell you… my 9 year old miniature pinscher sure feels like my offspring (just a much furrier version).

When I look over the past 9 years of being her “human,” I can’t help but recognize that she is the ONLY thing in my life that has remained constant! I’ve moved numerous times, changed jobs, had various boyfriends, heck… even my hair color has drastically changed.

Yet, SHE has been there every step of the way.

So, when she recently started to develop health problems with her back and having muscles spasms, I went on a hunt to find natural ways to help nurture her wellness.

And just like humans “are what they eat,” a dog’s diet plays a strong role in their health as well.

Here are the top 6 healthiest foods you need to start giving your dog:

1. Lean Meat: Lean meat – such as fish and chicken – is a great source of amino acids and B vitamins. These elements are needed for energy and maintaining your dog’s overall health.

        • Example: 50 pound dog = 1 pound per day.

  • DO NOT feed fatty scraps or leftovers.
  • Unless your dog gets regular, intense exercise, use lean meats (no more than 10% fat), remove skin from poultry and cut off and discard fatty parts.
  • It is better to feed dark meat poultry than breast (unless your dog requires a low-fat diet).

2. Eggs: The protein content of eggs is excellent for dogs, especially if your dog is a picky eater and needs to gain some weight. They also help in keeping your dog’s skin and coat nourished and shiny.

  • Dogs over 20 pounds can have 1 egg per day. Give less to smaller dogs.

3. Oatmeal: The fiber content in oatmeal can keep your dog’s digestive tract functioning smoothly, which is especially important in older dogs. Oatmeal also works great if your dog has wheat allergies.

  • Make sure to cook the oatmeal and let it cool down before serving.
  • ONLY serve plain oatmeal with no added salt or sugar.

4. Pears: This fruit is a great snack to give your pup, because they are high in fiber, vitamins, folic acid and potassium. You can give 1-2 pear cubes at a time, but remove the seeds and pit as they can be toxic for dogs.

5. Parsley: It is an incredible source of antioxidants, vitamins, calcium, potassium and beta carotene. It can also help halt bad breath (which I’ve noticed has started happening more as my dog has gotten older).

  • Simply chop some fresh parsley up and sprinkle it on your dog’s food.

6. Coconut oil: The lauric acid found in coconut oil can help destroy pathogenic bacteria and also helps prevent infection. The saturated fat content helps improve your dog’s coat as well as aids digestion.

  • Use sparingly to start:

        • 1 teaspoon per day for large dogs.
        • ¼ teaspoon for small dogs and puppies.

  • Once your dog’s body has adjusted to using coconut oil, follow these guidelines:
      • 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds body weight daily.
      • 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds.

Keep your pooch happy and healthy by adding in these top 6 foods to their diet. Because each dog is different, it is best to consult with your veterinarian before introducing new foods into your dog’s diet (especially if your dog has special dietary needs).
