Long term exposure to environmental heavy metals such as lead, mercury, aluminum and arsenic can cause acute or chronic toxicity. This toxicity can result in reduced mental and central nervous system capability and damage to vital organs. In some cases, exposure to heavy metals can even lead to cancer.

What Is An Environmental Heavy Metal?

A heavy metal is any relatively heavy dense metal or metalloid that is noted for its potential toxicity to the environment. Due to human activities such as mining and business practices, these heavy metals are irresponsibly released into the environment and as a result are found in our water and food supply.

Fortunately, there are some common everyday foods and spices that can help prevent the accumulation of heavy metals in the body.

According to a 2010 study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, rats that had been exposed to mercury were given curcurmin, the active compound in turmeric. During the study, the animals’ kidneys and livers were examined and the researchers concluded that curcumin had reduced the concentration of heavy metals in these organs and had reversed the damage caused by the heavy metals.

A more recent 2014 study also suggests that turmeric may help prevent liver damage from heavy metals through its ability to bind with metal compounds and in turn remove them from the body.

Carbohydrates found in seaweed – called alginates – are able to stick to heavy metals and help them be released out of the body. Seaweed compounds have been found to bind to and remove radioactive strontium (cancer-causing compound) from the body, according to research from Montreal’s McGill University.

Cilantro is also a great binder of heavy metals. Combined with chlorella, this herb has  proven to be able to remove up to 80 different heavy metals from the body.

Onions and garlic may taste great on pizza, but they are also powerful detoxifiers of heavy metals. Research done at GGS Indraprastha University has suggested this is the case.

Seaweed Salad
Serves: 4
  • ¾ ounce dried wakame or dulse seaweed (whole or cut)
  • 3 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 3 tbsp Bragg’s Liquid Aminos
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp stevia to taste
  • 1 tsp finely grated ginger
  • ½ tsp minced garlic
  • ¼ cup shredded carrots
  • 2 scallions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  1. Soak seaweed until slightly firm.
  2. Drain, rinse and squeeze excess water.
  3. Cut seaweed into ½ inch strips.
  4. Stir together all ingredients and then add in seaweed. Combine well. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Enjoy!

Cilantro Spinach Lime juice
  • 4 cups of spinach
  • 1 handful of cilantro
  • 1 lime
  1. Juice all ingredients and enjoy!
