Add These 10 Greens to Your Diet and Watch What Happens to Your Bones, Fatigue and WAISTLINE

If you’d like to be healthier, slimmer and more active, there is no better way than to add leafy greens in your daily diet.

Your granny said it right, greens are super food for all age groups and now that fact is backed up by scientific research too. Greens are cheap, easily available, can be added to any cuisine, and have as many benefits as any other vegetable or protein, with less than half its calorie count. Here are the top 10 greens you should add to your diet!

  1. Spinach: Forget about Popeye, the spinach has been a staple in Indian diet even before the cartoon was created! Tropical Amaranthus is one variety of spinach that is equally tasty as the popular palak. The vitamins that are highly valued in pasalai keerai or spinach are Vitamin A, vitamin E, Vitamin C and Vitamin K, along with nutrients such as betaine, choline, folate, niacin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and vitamin B6.
  2. Mustard greens: Called Methi in Hindi, these are the leaves of the same plant that produces mustard seeds. Mustard greens consist of beta-carotene that converts vitamin A to boost eye and bone health. The greens also contain glucosinolates, which are photo-nutrients that can help protect the cells of our liver. Make a stew out of these greens and enjoy it with piping hot rice or chapatti.
  3. Curry leaves: These are packed with iron, calcium, carbohydrates, phosphorous, magnesium, copper, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, plant sterols, amino acids, glycosides and flavonoids! No wonder Indians add these leaves to practically all dishes. When consumed regularly, they are believed to cleanse liver, regulate blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, help digestion, stop hair fall and boost hair growth.
  4. Coriander leaves: Coriander leaf or Cilantro is a wonderful source of dietary fiber, iron, Vitamin C, Vitamin K and protein. An excellent supplement for the digestive system, coriander supports liver functions and bowel movements. It has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and is particularly helpful for those suffering from kidney problems, iron deficiency, menstrual problems and nervous disorders.
  5. Drumstick or Moringa leaves: Drumstick leaves are a power house of iron and the most nutritious part of the Moringa plant, being a major source of B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese and protein. You can enjoy these leaves sautéed or steamed lightly,or as a stew with rice. Make sure not to cook it over 140 degrees Fahrenheit, as it destroys some of its nutritional content. 
  6. Radish Greens: Radish leaves contain so much vitamin C and beta carotene that consuming just one cup of these leaves is enough to meet the daily requirements for the above mentioned nutrients. They also are one of the richest sources of calcium, and can be added to salads and stews, for an enhanced taste.
  7. Carrot Greens. Carrot top leaves are packed with potassium, chlorophyll, and other nutrients, so you cannot go wrong in including them in your diet. Some may be sensitive to these leaves (as they contain alkaloids and nitrates, they are only harmful if you eat gallons in one sitting! You can use carrot greens as a garnish, a salad ingredient, or as a puree instead of spinach.
  8. Agathi greens.Sesbania grandiflora is believed to be named after the Vedic sage, Agastya and is hailed as a wonder herb for women’s intimate problems. Agathi leaves taste bitter and tart, which can be tackled if you cook it with coconut milk. Agathi flowers are also edible, if you like crunchy… otherwise, it is best to steam or pressure cook them.
  9. Kale: Kale has lutein, an antioxidant that strengthens eyesight, along with beta-carotene and vitamin C. It also has sulforaphane, a photo nutrientwith cancer-fighting properties. Though you can add them raw in your salad, the best way to enjoy this bitter leafy green is to steam or sauté it.
  10. Lettuce: Finally, we come to the humble lettuce, which is not so humble after all, given that it contains Vitamin K and manganese, a mineral necessary for proper carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Even though it is a plant belonging to the sunflower family, lettuce is exclusively used a leafy green. It adds the much needed moisture and crunchiness in a salad, and a cup of leaves will add only 7 extra calories in your diet!

While the above-mentioned greens are safe to eat any time of your life, it is advisable not to eat the same green for two consecutive days. The greens have a defense mechanism which triggers an allergy reaction in the human body, if you consume the same green continuously.So it is better to eat a different one every day, which also keep your taste buds happy!
