Time To Start Growing Sprouts!

Written by: Lindsay Sibson

Some people joke that food tastes better when it’s free.

However, I feel that food tastes even BETTER when it’s homegrown!

Knowing exactly where your food came from, how it was made and putting your time and attention into it is an act of intention and love.

The best part is that you don’t have to have a huge garden or a lot of space to get started growing your own food.

A great place to start that takes minimal space, time, money and effort is to grow your own sprouts!

Here is your quick guide to what sprouts are, why you should be eating them and how to grow them in your kitchen.

What Are Sprouts?

Sprouts are soaked and germinated seeds, nuts, or grains, such as:

  • Chia seeds
  • Alfalfa
  • Lentils
  • Red Clover seeds
  • Mung beans
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Broccoli seeds
  • Sunflower seeds

Benefits Of Sprouts

  • Incredibly nutritious and inexpensive
  • Makes the nutrients more bioavailable
  • Take only a few days to grow
  • Reduce lectins and phytic acid
  • Sprouting increases the nutrient content of the seeds and legumes
  • Sprouting makes them easier to digest
  • Helps break down the anti-nutrients in nuts, grains and seeds that make them difficult to digest
  • Sprouting increases beneficial enzymes
  • Sprouting dramatically increases the content of B-vitamins, carotene and vitamin C

How To Grow Sprouts At Home

What You Need:

  • A wide-mouth large mason jar
    • Quart size or half gallon size
  • A sprouting lid
    • Alternative: A piece of cheesecloth and a rubber band
  • Organic sprouting seeds
    • Look for “sprouting seeds” and “organic” on the label

1. Wash all equipment to ensure it is clean and sterile (including your hands).

2. Pour 1 type of sprouting seed into the glass jar.

      • If using small seeds use 1 teaspoon.
      • For larger beans or lentils use ½ cup.

3. Cover the seeds with 1 cup of filtered water.

4. Put the sprouting lid or cheesecloth over the jar.

5. Allow to soak for 12 hours.

      • Tip: do it overnight!

6. After 12 hours, strain off the water.

7. Rinse the seeds well with filtered water and drain again.

      • Place the jar at a slight angle in a bowl to allow the excess water to drain out.

8. Several times a day, re-rinse the sprouts with filtered water and then return to the tilted position.

9. Sprouting  will start within 1-2 days and are ready to harvest between 3-7 days.

10. Rinse with filtered water when sprouting is finished.

11. Store in a covered jar in the fridge for up to a week.

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
