Throat Remedies To Try The Next Time You Start To Feel Sick

Sage is an incredibly popular herb that has been used in homes and kitchens for thousands of years. More recently it has become a widely used incense and smudging herb. Its leaves on their own have some pretty incredible uses for inside your body as well.  

If your are looking to grow this awesome herb in your garden, remember that it doesn’t like cool wet weather and is hard to start from a seed. Try your local nursery or get your start from root cutting in the early spring.

Warning To Nursing Mothers: If you take sage on a daily basis such as in a cup of tea, sage can start to decrease your milk supply, so be aware.

The Many Benefits Of Sage

Sage In Digestion

If you eat fatty foods, sage can then help your body to digest them. Sage can also stimulate your liver and even help to lower your cholesterol.

Especially if you are ingesting it, just be sure NOT to take more than 15 grams of sage a day. I can’t imagine a reason for someone to take this much at a time, but just like most things, there is a toxicity limit and you can get indigestion from the plant, which would be quite counterproductive.

Other Medicinal Uses

If you are overcoming a long illness such as the flu, mono, or any other absolutely exhausting sickness, then sage can really help you to build up your vitality and strength. Relieve your stress by making homemade sage tea with mint lemon balm and rosemary.

Sage is often used in deodorant as well and can even be used to reduce sweating.

Especially For Women

If your menstrual cycle is getting to be overwhelming, sage can help to stimulate your hormones and help you to return to a more normal state. It has also shown great promise in being able to help defeat the common vaginal infection known as leukorrhea.

Sage For Sore Throats

Sage can be one of your very best friends when you are in a heated battle against the flu or the common cold. It is a natural cleanser of bad bacteria and can even calm your mucous membranes, acting as a natural decongestant. Sage is an anti inflammatory as well and can help sooth your throat and mouth.  

People have been using sage for sore throats, as a mouthwash, gargle, or even throat spray for many years. Some have even said that it works really well for relieving painful canker sores.

Sage Throat Gargle

This is an effective gargle for any sore throat. Be aware though, this doesn’t taste particularly good, but it works so ridiculously well, that it is easy for people to get hooked on taking advantage of its wonderful benefits.


  • 1 tbsp of dried sage leaves
  • 1-2 tbsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of goldenseal root powder
  • A little pinch of cayenne powder (Optional)
  • ½ cup of apple cider vinegar (unpasteurized if possible)

How To Construct Throat Gargle:

1. Pour ½ cup of boiling water over your dried sage. Cover and allow to steep for about 30-45 minutes, then strain well.  

2. Next add in salt, goldenseal powder and cayenne to your tea and stir well to dissolve.  

3. Finally, stir in the apple cider vinegar.

How To Use Throat Gargle:

Gargle a teaspoon or two of this new mixture every 30 minutes to an hour.  The longer you are able to stand gargling, the better. Make sure not to swallow; it won’t be harmful necessarily, but you sure as heck don’t want to be tasting it too much.

Sage Mouth And Throat Spray

This is definitely tastier than the gargle. This spray might be more popular with your less herbally inclined friends, though it may not be quite as effective as the throat gargle, so just be aware.


  • 2-3 tbsp of dried or fresh sage leaves
  • ¼ cup of vodka or brandy (can REPLACE with 1-2 tbsp echinacea tincture for a stronger health kick)
  • 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 1 tbsp of honey (always optional for its soothing and sweetening properties)

How To Assemble Throat Spray:

1. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the sage. Cover and allow to steep for 30 minutes, then strain.

2. Drink ¼ cup. Then combine the remaining ¾ cup with the vodka or brandy (or echinacea tincture), adding in the peppermint essential oil and honey (if using).

3. Store in a bottle with a mister or spray top. Anytime you would use a throat spray, spray away!

Who knew how powerful and amazing the health benefits of Sage were? It always seems that the more we explore the plants of our world, the more we find out about how they are supremely beneficial to our health.
