Turmeric, the yellow root that – when grounded – helps give curry its distinctive yellow color, may just be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence.

The spice is cultivated from the ground as a root spice and offers food a warm and bitter taste. Although turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb, science has just begun proving that turmeric really does possess compounds that have medicinal properties.

The properties are called curcumoids, the most important of which is curcumin. Curcumin is the main active compound in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a strong antioxidant.

Chemists first describe curcumin’s structure in 1910, but only in the last 30 years have studies provided facts on turmeric’s use in a wide range of diseases.

Here are just some of the many amazing reasons adding turmeric to your diet is a great idea:

Can Help Prevent And Improve Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s-disease

The curcumin in turmeric has a potential role in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. According to an article published in the journal Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and lipophilic action of the curcumin was found to improve the cognitive functions in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

A growing body of evidence shows that oxidative stress, free radicals, beta-amyloid plaque and abnormal inflammatory reactions contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Because curcumin can help decrease beta-amyloid plaque, microglia formation, inflammation and free radicals, overall memory in patients with Alzheimer’s disease can improve.

Helps With Digestive Disorders

An article published in the journal Systematic Reviews showed that turmeric’s traditional use for treating digestive disorders was also proven in clinical studies.

Turmeric helped heal sores in peptic ulcer disease, killed off helicobacter pylori after 4 weeks of curcumin therapy and helped provide relief to those with irritable bowel syndrome.

This amazing spice also helped improve symptoms from Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and GERD (acid reflux).

Improves Kidney Function In Diabetes

One of the major risk factors for kidney disease is diabetes, a disease in which the body does not make enough insulin or cannot use normal amounts of insulin properly. With diabetes, the small blood vessels in the body are injured.

This includes the blood vessels in the kidneys, which means the kidneys can no longer properly help to detoxify the blood. Up to 40% of those with type 2 diabetes will eventually suffer from kidney failure.

Turmeric can help lower the risk of developing kidney disease in those with type 2 diabetes.

A study published in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders found that rats that were fed turmeric had improved kidneys, gaining the ability to filter toxins by 50% and helped reduce kidney enlargement by 60%.

This shows that turmeric can play a beneficial role in helping reduce kidney complication during diabetes.

Can Help Slow Down Cancer Growth

Numerous studies have shown that turmeric’s properties can help slow the growth of cancer. A nonrandomized trial at Johns Hopkins University found that 480mg of curcumin taken with 20mg quercetin (a compound found in apples) slowed the growth of precancerous polyps in the colon by about 60% in five patients with an inherited colorectal cancer syndrome known as familial adenomatous polyposis.

A phase II study at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center monitored 25 pancreatic cancer patients taking 8g of curcumin by mouth daily without any other treatment. The study found a 73% tumor reduction in one patient and the disease stabilized in four other patients, one of whom lived 2.5 years longer than predicted.

Reduces Inflammation In The Body

Inflammation plays a major role in almost every disease, including heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative conditions.

A study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry found that the curcumin in turmeric actually targets multiple steps in the inflammatory pathway. Curcumin blocks NF-kB, a molecule that travels into the nucleus of cells and turns on genes that promote inflammation. By turning off this molecule, curcumin fights inflammation at the molecular level.

Helps Alleviate Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that affects and destroys the joints, cartilage and bone. Most prescription medications for the condition come with a string of negative side-effects, but researchers were successfully able to reduce the soreness and inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis in a study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research.

By giving patients 500mg of curcumin daily, not only were symptoms improved, but the benefits came without any negative side effects.

At this point, you shouldn’t need any more convincing. If you’re interested in buying a turmeric extract supplement, make sure to buy one that is also combined with piperine, the main bioactive compound in black pepper. The piperine helps to absorb the curcumin by 2000% and, without it, turmeric is more likely to pass through the body without being absorbed.
