The Bottom of Your Shoe is Dirtier Than a Toilet Seat (and other reasons to not wear them indoors)

I used to wear shoes in the house all of the time. Getting ready, I’d put my shoes on in the bedroom with my outfit and then make my way to the bathroom for some makeup and finally downstairs to leave the house.
I probably walked through 75% of my home during that one routine. Coming in from running errands, I’d keep my flip flops on as I put away the groceries and fixed up the house. In fact, I would pretty regularly wear flip flops as slippers.
Now, though, I have a rule for visitors of our home – NO SHOES in the house. This goes for everyone – friends, family, the babysitter, even a repairman. I know that it’s annoying, but I really, really don’t want them tracking their “day” through my house, especially now that we have a baby with us.
Here are the top 3 reasons why you should also enforce this rule:
1. Dirt. Wearing your shoes indoors means that you are bringing in dirt, liquid and other junk from the streets. This is slowly ruining your carpeting and hardwood floors.
And then – when you decide you don’t want to wear the shoes anymore – your bare feet are now walking through the dirt you already tracked around the house. Those same feet then get into your bed at night (YUCK).
2. Bacteria & Toxins. Think about all of the places you have walked today. Sidewalks that dogs poop on, public bathrooms, a hospital, a grocery store where milk was just spilled. Maybe you work in a factory with chemicals.
Now think of all that bad stuff on the soles of your shoes – toxins and bacteria in crazy amounts. A study once found 9 different types of bacteria on the bottom of shoes, making them dirtier than a toilet seat, they said.
Whether you bring in e.coli, or c. diff, which cause terrible cramps or diarrhea, it will live and grow once you bring it into the house and if it’s walked all over your floors, I hope you don’t ever lay down on them (or have a baby or pets crawling around)!
3. Walking barefoot is good for you. Take it from expert David Wolfe – walking barefoot every day can help with MANY common issues like stress, energy levels and chronic pain.
What’s the easiest way to apply this rule? I put a friendly handwritten sign in our foyer for when we are not home. It simply says, “Please take off your shoes” with a smiley face. When we are home – we just ask, “Would you mind taking off your shoes?” So far, no one has given us too much trouble and I suspect it will be the same for you!
