I love Halloween. Seeing the kids in their adorable costumes and hearing their laughter as they meander through the streets, going from door-to-door to load their bags up with candy (let me be clear, I do NOT love the candy part of this holiday… we’ll get to that though.).

I love carving pumpkins, roasting their seeds (loaded with zinc – so great for thyroid health), snuggling up on the couch to watch a good scary movie and enjoying seasonal snacks.

But what if there was something you could give these little bundles-of-unlimited-energy that wouldn’t disrupt their hard-working organs, could actually provide nutritional benefits and still taste amazing?

 

That is entirely possible!

The Fitlife Team and I wanted to make a fun video for you to enjoy this Halloween, which we had a blast filming and hope it made you smile…

Today I am going to give you some of my favorite things to hand out on Halloween that are free of junk and loaded with superfoods and health-promoting goodness for you and your kiddos to enjoy!

Let’s Get Real

 

I get it. Halloween is loaded with temptation – and it can be really tricky to avoid all those ooey-gooey treats and sugar-laden candies. But chances are, they’re leaving you wired but tired, moody, lethargic and likely, further from reaching your health goals.

Sure, in the moment, they probably taste great – but is that moment of bliss worth those stubborn pounds you just can’t shake? Or poor sleep that leaves you cranky and irritable the next day?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there – myself included!

A little secret: I used to love Butterfinger candy bars and chemical-filled, hormone-injected ice cream – but now I know what they’re made of and they just don’t appeal to me anymore… (healthier options below – keep reading). Maybe you can relate.

And shockingly, some of these superstars can actually help you LOSE weight, GAIN energy and PROMOTE quality sleep!

The Sweet Stuff

 

It’s no secret that Americans over-consume sugar. You’ve read the headlines, “…the average American consumes roughly 60+ pounds of sugar each year…” – and the truth is, sugar is really addictive! It actually releases an opiate-like substance that triggers the brain’s reward center causing you to crave even more. It’s a sneaky little thing, that sugar. And chances are you are one of the millions of people stuck in a rut when it comes to giving it up…

And it’s NOT your fault!

Did you know that the consumption of sugar is growing faster than world’s population, increasing about 1% every year? That is absolutely crazy!

Refined Sugar Is No Joke!

 

“Refined” is the “fake” sugar you see in all the processed and packaged food at the market. And it’s estimated that this detrimental substance is hidden in roughly 74% of all packaged food!

It’s often responsible for such things as:

And it depletes the body of essential B vitamins – and deficiency of this critical vitamin can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Heart Palpitations
  • Chronic Fatigue

It’s so addictive, in fact, that ditching the sweet stuff can actually give way to withdrawal symptoms likened to that of a drug addict or alcoholic. It’s seriously terrible!

Why Do We Crave It?

 

Back in the day, our ancestors indulged in fruit whenever they could get it to provide energy and store fat for the cooler months (yep, it does this for your body too only for most of us, we don’t need the fat – we have jackets and warm clothing to keep us cozy!). At that time, it was a survival thing whereas today, most of us are fortunate to have a roof over our head and food in our belly (too much, some may believe – but that’s another topic…).

So you can say that the “craving” for sugar began a long time ago and has evolved with society, only now it’s consumed for far different reasons (emotional eating, comfort, boredom, convenience, etc.).

Here are some absolutely amazing recipes to try the next time you have a hankering for something sweet but don’t want to fall off the healthy-habits wagon. Give ‘em a try and let me know what you think!

Pumpkin Pie Power Balls

Ingredients
  • 1 cup pitted dates
  • ½ cup walnuts
  • ⅓ cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • Dash of sea salt
  • Coconut oil, ghee or grass-fed butter (for greasing the cookie sheet)
Instructions
  1. Soak the dates in warm water for 5-10 minutes to soften.
  2. Place the walnuts in a food processor or high speed blender and pulse until ground.
  3. Add the remainder of the ingredients and pulse until well blended, reaching a sticky consistency (except for the coconut oil - that is just for greasing your cookie sheet).
  4. Transfer mixture into a bowl and place in the fridge to allow to firm up a bit (at least 20 minutes).
  5. Remove bowl from the fridge and scoop out mixture in spoonfuls, rolling them into 2” balls.
  6. Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 325 degree for 15-20 minutes, or until slightly golden.
  7. Allow to cool and enjoy!
  8. Can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge up to 7 days.

Dates – An awesome natural sweetener, dates have been used since 6000 B.C.! Not only are they one of the sweetest fruits, but they are also good for your digestive system, your heart, your blood pressure and your brain.

One of the most interesting health benefits of dates is for pregnant women. Studies have shown that date consumption not only helps women stay healthy during the pregnancy but may also contribute to a shorter, more favorable (induction not necessary)  labor and delivery!

Walnuts – Regular consumption of nuts has been linked to increased longevity and a healthier life!

Walnuts in particular help to lower blood pressure and “bad” cholesterol, aid weight loss, boost brain health and may even help you sleep better. Walnuts are a natural source of melatonin – the hormone your body produces to help relax your body in preparation for sleep.

Pumpkin – Not only are pumpkins extremely easy to find this time of year, but they contain a surprising number of health benefits!

Pumpkins contain more than 200% your daily need of vitamin A, which is important for maintaining good eyesight, strengthening bones and teeth, preserving urinary health and boosting immunity. Vitamin A strengthens all the entry points into the human body (i.e. the nose, eyes, mouth, intestine), which are the body’s first areas of defence against sickness and infection.

Pumpkins also contain anti-cancer properties thanks to their bright orange color, which is caused by the antioxidant beta-carotene.

Coconut – By now you know how obsessed I am with coconut. Coconut oil is full of medium-chain fatty acids, which are quickly converted by the body into energy. Coconuts contain antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer properties. They are a nutritional powerhouse that can help boost digestion, increase energy, promote healthy skin and hair, strengthen your immune system and much much more.

Vanilla – Vanilla has been used for centuries as an aphrodisiac and is known for its ability to increase libido and help with impotence. It also contains certain active compounds that act as pain relievers to the central nervous system.
