THIS Can Make You Think Broccoli Is Chocolate
Written by: Kat Gal
Junk food doesn’t have to be junk food anymore. There are so many ways to “healthify” things. Just think of avocado chocolate puddings, sweet potato brownies, black bean brownies, banana ‘nicecream,’ chocolate bliss balls made with cacao and other superfoods, sneaking spinach into your pancakes and so on. Creativity goes a long way and even your junk food addicted friend won’t feel the difference.
But what if there was a way to make vegetables taste like your favorite sweet tricking you into eating more healthy greens?
Well, there is!
Taste Buddy Can Make Broccoli Taste Like Chocolate
Scientists lead by Professor Adrian Cheok at the City University of London created a device called the Taste Buddy which could trick your brain into thinking broccoli tastes like chocolate.
At first this started out as a fun project, according to Professor Cheok, but it led to something exciting that they saw had the potential of creating a positive social impact.
According to Professor Cheok, many children hate the taste of vegetables. As an engineer he always knew he wanted to make something that could allow children to eat veggies that tasted like chocolate. Perhaps it was his own childhood dream, who knows.
The way Taste Buddy works is it gives off a low-level electrical current when placed in your mouth. This current has the potential to stimulate your taste buds and imitate sweet and salty tastes. By tricking your brain and stimulating your taste buds, you can actually believe that broccoli tastes like chocolate. Such a clever trick could make healthy eating easier by transforming healthy food to tasting like your favorite, yet less healthy dishes.
The device is only in an early prototype stage and it could take about 20 years until it can be widely available and cut to fit into small traditional frames, such as cups or cutlery. For now, Taste Buddy will make its first appearance at The Big Bang Uk Young Scientists and Engineer Fair in BIrmingham, UK in March 2017.
Pros And Cons
As a lover of both chocolate and broccoli, I am puzzled. I am fascinated by this new technology and see so much potential and creativity in it. I question though if changing the taste is enough when the texture of broccoli will remain.
I also argue that it is better to change your taste buds naturally. You may not like broccoli and other veggies at first, if you are not used to them. But your body will adapt eventually.
You can change your taste buds naturally and gradually.
Start out with sweeter vegetables, moving to the more bitter veggies gradually. Add seasoning to your dishes and add some sweetness (like banana or apples) to your smoothies and juices. Slowly your taste buds will change and your body will recognize and appreciate the foods that are meant to be eaten.
What do you think? Yay or nay? Would you try this device? Do you think this will be life-changing? Have you experienced changes in your taste buds by changing your diet? Let us know in the comments below. We would love to hear from you.
