With the New Year rolling in, a lot of people have set goals to go to the gym more regularly, lose weight, gain muscle mass, etc. In fact, statistically speaking, these are the more popular New Year’s resolutions across the board!

So, who is going to succeed? Who will be in the 8% that actually CRUSHES their New Year’s goals?

I took the FitLife team to SealFit this week to get some tips from the best in the business. So, are you ready to step UP into a better version of yourself? All you need is the desire!

The Top 3 Attributes For Success

First, let’s look at what retired Navy SEAL Commander Mark Divine says are the most important attributes for success.

Commitment

This may seem obvious, but it is extremely important. Are you 100% committed to your goals? If not – if you’re only 40% or 65% – you leave yourself the option to quit. Today, I challenge you to commit to YOU. To commit to your goals that will help you RISE to that better version of yourself.

Honor & Integrity

These two go hand in hand. You have to have honor for yourself (and your body!) and the people around you, and the integrity to stand up for what is right. This will set you up to be an example to others. You must be honest about your shortcomings, take ACCOUNTABILITY for the times you slip up or miss a day at the gym, and then work hard to make it up to yourself. You know you deserve better!

Authenticity

The more authentic you become, the more happiness and success you will find. Look at it this way… most people have about 3 different versions of themselves. One is the self they present when they are in public. Another is the self they present when they are around close friends and family. Their last self is who they are when they are alone and no one is watching. The goal should be to INTEGRATE all these people into ONE incredible, authentic YOU.

Become the same person at home, at the gym, at work, on the street – allow your true personality to shine.

4 Steps To CRUSH Your Fitness Goals

Let’s take a look at 4 steps recommended by Mark Divine to CRUSH your fitness goals, weight loss goals and muscle building goals.

Step ONE: Manage Breathing

Breathing is the link between your MIND and BODY. And of course if you want to be successful, there has GOT to be a direct line between these two! Most fitness experts agree that your body is much stronger than your mind… meaning it can push limits that you don’t believe it can.

So when you strengthen the connection between the two, you increase your confidence and your ability to push harder.

Here is a simple breathing exercise to use at home, at the gym or anytime you feel yourself giving into doubt:

Inhale 4 counts, exhale 4 counts.   

This exercise triggers your parasympathetic nervous system, which calms your mind and enhances your focus.

Step TWO: Take Control of Mental Dialogue

Instead of doubts, worries, wonders, fears – fill yours head with positive mantras.

Here are some of my favorites:

This muscle is doing all the work.

Breathe.

This hurts so good!

Obstacles are just hurdles to overcome.

This workout is a mandatory meeting I’ve scheduled with myself.

This is the best workout of my life!

Stay strong.

No matter how slow I go, I’m still lapping everyone on the couch.

I am worth all that I desire.

I am that much closer to reaching my goals.

I am powerful and full of energy.

I achieve all that I set my mind to.

Positive energy gives you power!! Don’t let your inner critic take the reins.

Step THREE: Have A Clear Goal

You need to have a vision for what you are going for. In order to know where to go and what to do, you’ve got to know where it is you want to go,! Otherwise you’re just wandering around aimlessly! And ain’t nobody got time for that!

If you always have a clear vision, you will be filled with a powerful WHY. This why must be strong enough to help propel you through barriers.

When you start suffering or feeling the strain, your WHY is the strength that pulls you through.

Step FOUR: One More Rep

Microtask, micro victories… just ONE MORE REP. That’s all you need to focus on.

When you wake up in the morning and put on your gym shoes, don’t think about the weight of a whole workout. Just think about one set. One rep. Heck, just think about actually getting yourself into the gym!
