The True Cost Of Fresh Pressed Juice
Written by: Lindsay Sibson
“That will be $12, please.”
Well… she had manners as she took my money and handed me over a fresh pressed juice.
So what gives?
Why the “hefty” price tag for what seems to be just a cup o’ juice?
Let’s take a deeper look into the TRUE COST of fresh pressed juice.
Pressed Juicery Prices
Whether you are strolling into your local fresh pressed juicery or you stumble upon a new spot, chances are you will come across some pretty price tags on their pressed juicery menus.
If you try to dig deeper into what exactly it takes for the pressed juicery to create their juices, you may find yourself none the wiser, because many of these companies consider that sort of information proprietary and confidential.
Depending on WHAT type of juice you are ordering and what type of ingredients are used to make that juice… the price points can vary (and cost upwards of $13-$15 for ONE juice!).
The Wise Juice Consumer
Whowhooo! You found a fresh juice for $5 – what a steal!
But – don’t go celebrating just yet.
This is where things can get a bit cloudy – and it’s YOUR job to know exactly what you are getting for that juicy price.
A $5 juice isn’t a steal if it’s made from poor quality produce and consists of cheap fruits; on the other hand, a $10 juice could be worth it if it’s made from organic, top notch ingredients.
Consumer Reports found that on average, organic food costs 47% MORE than conventional versions of the same thing.
Therefore, if your fresh pressed juicery ONLY uses organic ingredients… higher price points would most certainly be expected. Not to mention the professional grade juicing machines they use cost into the 10’s of thousands of dollars!
What also adds to the cost is most juice bars pride themselves on handcrafting their own special blends, which requires a staff to do.
The Price Of Perish
You LOVE juices because they are raw, fresh and don’t contain any icky preservatives that will gunk up your body.
But, the downside of fresh pressed juices is that they ONLY have a short shelf life, so cafes have to take into consideration the cost of this waste.
Alternatively, some national brands, such as Suja, rely on a method called high-pressure processing that makes their juices shelf-stable and safe for mass distribution. As a result, their price points will seem much cheaper than your pressed juicery (organic) price points.
