What do you normally do when you get sick?

Chances are, you go to your doctor or – even without a doctor visit – you end up at the pharmacy for some sort of medication. If you are into natural medicine, you probably stock up on some vitamin or herbal supplements, perhaps some homeopathic pills.

But what did your ancestors do a few thousand years ago, back when there were no pharmacies, no drugs, no pills, no injections and no supplements?

During ancestral times, people used to use organic herbs to treat themselves. They prepared mixtures, drinks and tinctures from several plants using their roots, leaves or flowers to tend to their illness.

Surely, there are medicinal benefits of our modern times – superfoods, vitamin supplements, juice powders, etc. – which can all be handy when you are sick. Modern medicine has its place too, just look at all the successful, life-saving surgeries performed after accidents, for example.

But, just because we’ve evolved, why throw everything away? Even in our day, the Earth is still providing us with some incredible resources to help with our ailments and sicknesses. Pure plants are some the best medicines out there, hands down and it is important for you to know about them so you can bring them into your life and reap their fantastic natural benefits.

Here is the list of the top 7 medicinal plants you should know about:

1. Cannabis

Let’s start with the most controversial one. Cannabis is illegal in most countries, because of its psychoactive constituent tetrahydrocannabinol. Yet, cannabis is a plant that can have remarkable positive effects on your health if used correctly.

The health benefits of cannabis range from treating depression, relieving anxiety, reducing blood pressure, alleviating pain to helping with glaucoma.

Cannabis is not a gateway drug. It doesn’t kill brain cells. In fact, where cannabis is easily and legally available, the use of hard drugs (like heroin and cocaine) actually decreases. Just look at the Netherlands as an example.

And medical cannabis is NOT the same as recreational cannabis either. The components are created in a way to provide relief and support, not to get the user “high.”

2. Lady Ferns

Lady ferns are excellent for minor cuts and burns. Just grab some and roll them up between your palms. Its juices will allow the stinging to ease and the pain the subside (a much better sensation than hydrogen peroxide, right?).

If you don’t have lady fern available, bracken fern is similar to lady fern and will work just the same.

3. Tansy

Tansy can be used for so many things. It is used for flavoring beer and stews. It is used as an old-world aster and remedy. It is also a wonderful insect repellent.

Rub the leaves on your skin to create an effective bug repellent. You can also help treat worms with it. Some say it can be poisonous when extracted, but don’t worry, a few leaves are not harmful when ingested.

4. Mint

Mint is literally the most versatile herb you can use.

Mint is perfect for aromatherapy as its natural fresh scent is the perfect relaxant. This same aroma helps you to kill bad breath or body odor as well.

Mint is very helpful at easing nausea. It is a highly effective remedy for morning sickness.

Mint tea is great for all kinds of stomach disorders and bugs. It may even help you lose weight too by curbing your appetite.

Add mint to your salads, green juices, smoothies and even your mojitos.

5. Alfalfa

Alfalfa is my personal favorite, because it is so incredibly rich in minerals and health-promoting nutrients.

Did you know that its roots grow 20 to 30 feet deep? Crazy, right?! It is considered the ‘father of all plants.’

Alfalfa can help with morning sickness, nausea, kidney stones, kidney pain and urinary discomfort. Alfalfa is also a powerful diuretic. It even has a little bit of a stimulant power, letting your body get energized while healing from an illness.

Alfalfa is also an excellent liver and bowel cleanser. It can help you to reduce cholesterol.

Alfalfa is easy to use: excellent in salads, in smoothies and in juices. You can even sprout them yourself to save money and to have some fun.

6. Sage

Sage is another super herb. It is highly anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antifungal.

Sage aids digestion, relieves cramps, reduces diarrhea, dries up phlegm, fights colds, reduces inflammation, reduces swelling and kills bacteria.

Some claim it even brings color back to gray hair. Talk about saving money on dying your hair!

7. Red Clover

Red clover is something you may recall adoring as a child in your garden. Not only is it pretty, but it is also very healthful too.

Red clover’s reddish pink blossoms can be used to fight colds and coughs. They are amazing detoxifiers and blood cleansers as well.

They have been used in cancer prevention, aiding indigestion, lowering cholesterol, helping with whooping cough, helping with asthma and working with some STDs.
